Mahogany Desk

As promised, pics of the Desk that I built for my GF. I know it's nearly impossible for the styleforum collective mind to ignore anything but we're picking out a rug for under the desk, something Persian. A chair is on the way (i forget which one from DWR) and a Tolomeo lamp is also on the way. I have some ideas in mind for the rest of the room as well, the shelf is on its way out the door when I can replace it with one I build from a hardwood. Found some tinkets for it, the frame is Sterling from RL (not plated!), a Steuben glass animal, Magnifier from Hermes and we found a cool little jar from Herend for stuffs. The desk is African Mahogany, drawer fronts are Sapeli and drawer interiors are Walnut. I've yet to find any handles that I'm comfortable with, but I'm working on it.

Pretty clean, looks good. How long did it take to build and what kind of finish did you use on the wood?

Thanks Logan,

Took about a month and I used a combination of Dark Raw tung oil and wiping varnish. I varnished the top and drawers and tung oiled the rest of the desk. In fact I'll probably tung oil it again soon, it surprisingly takes a while for the tung oil to be pulled into the wood.

That's amazing Skinny. Looks like it came right from Office Depot. I don't mean that as an insult, btw.

Very nice. (What's a tinket?). If you don't want to mess up your very clean lines with handles or pulls, you might try routing in some finger depressions on each drawer's side edge next to the knee hole. I like your work. The tinkets (?), not so much, maybe.

Good idea, I may well do that instead. I hate cheap handles, if I could find something awesome in sterling or something like that I'd be all over it, but so far I'm between a handle from Nanz and doing as you suggested.

Nice! My dad and I built something similar a few years ago, but with shelves instead of drawers. Also made a TV stand out of cedar my grandparents had laying around. Next time I'm at my parents I'll take some pics if I remember

Office depot is particle board, that will definitely be solid wood.

I think the desk is pretty good, and the wood used Mahogany, is a nice one. Not any kind of wood. It is very resistant and can lats in like forever, especially i
f taken good care of.

With that stuff, you are paying for the design, not the construction or materials.

My favorite furniture is made by Thos. Moser. All actual wood made by real artisans. Although it's a "brand" that has gained notoriety, at least it's good. http://thosmoser.com/
