I notice that they say that I should pick 1/2 a size smaller than what I normally wear. Is that really true? Did anyone of you guys actually had to get a smaller pair? I usually wear size 9.5 USA. So I should get a size 9?

Yes. I just bought a pair and you have to size down by 1/2 size.

Affirmitive. Converse tend to run a bit wide as well.

i find that they vary

my current chuck taylors are true to size, but i tried on a pair of black monochrome all stars and they seemed to be a half to full size larger.

I size up. But maybe that's because I can't find a 'wide' in All-Stars. Before you purchase your canvas cap-toe bluchers, try them on.

Sized half a size as well. Found them too tight across the tow otherwise.
