Ice Hockey - Page 47

I think he's worth more around $5M/yr. To my understanding, Philly offered a massive salary with the idea of him assuming a leadership role on the team, which I believe is something to pay extra for. However, I don't see how Briere has fulfilled this in any way as guys like Carter have really stepped up and made an impact.

They knew Richards was their C when they signed him long-term.

Agreed, they've been grooming him for the captaincy for a couple of years now. The only "recent" signings they were expecting leadership from was Jason Smith (that didn't last long) and Kimmo Timonen. Carter has really stepped up his scoring, but is not the leadership type at all.

Carter is going elsewhere, I don't think he'll get to the end of his current contract term. The guy's stock is among the highest in the league. I would trade him now, personally.

Worth quoting and commenting on. Sakic and Yzerman are similar in many ways (being a Detroit fan, I had a natural dislike of all things Avalanche...Sakic being the exception).

Close in career points, achievements, class and leadership.

I met Yzerman a few years ago in Buffalo at a signing. I came much later than I thought necessary, but after sitting there for like 4 hours, he still took the time to sign stuff for people who didn't "make the line". That guy is one class act.

People who know, know the difference. Sakic is a no-brainer to make the hall of fame and was a great player, but Yzerman is probably the greatest captain in the history of the game. He is a ladder rung above.

Umm, Messier?

The problem with Briere in Philly is that he is the "anti-Flyer". He's everything the Flyer fans, and their team never was...soft, finesse, etc...anyone who succeeds in Philly has to be like Pronger, a tough mofo. I love that about them, but hate them with a passion. I think of guys like Tochett, Lindros, Clarke, Richards....and man, were they smart to lock him up. I think he's one of the best all around players in the league, and a natural leader. He's a guy I love to watch play...smarts and grit. They just need a real goaltender, always have since the Porsche hit the wall...Hextall was alright, Conn SMythe and all, but never a real top tender in the league.

Agree with first part, not so much with the second.
I wouldn't mind if they traded Carter. I am tired of watching him floating no matter how many goals he scored last year. People on hockey forums get hostile when it's brought up.

The only guy who you could really make a case for in contention, and the only reason I have to qualify "Yzerman is the greatest captain of all time" with "probably".

Ducks sign Nick Boynton. I must say, I'm impressed at how Bob Murray has made some amazing deals for the Ducks in such a short period of time!

^Yeah the loss of Pronger will not make them a worse team, in fact once Giggy gets on the move, I'm betting they end up better than last year.
