It's been a few years but I recommend the Europa and Regina. I believe it is a Westin hotel now.

Just dont do what I did ..... think Venice Mestre and Venice are the one and same thing if booking accomodation online. Was suprisingly cheap and then realised why.

While in Venice if you like sweets try the wallnut and apple roll/strudel ...i think it is called a 'Miele'

I live in Venice, although not at the moment.
The Monaco and Grand Canal is a very good 4-star hotel; the restaurant is excellent and in May you will be able to eat on the terrace (right on the Canal).
Also Londra Palace.
A smaller, very "venetian decor" 4-star is the Hotel Palazzo Stern, near the Accademia.

Then you were unfortunate because there are at least several excellent restaurants there, and quite a few small, very good places.

I think the quality at La Vedova has gone down a bit. Al Timon in Cannaregio (Fondamenta Ormesini) is similar but better imo. Osteria Mocenigo near Palazzo Mocenigo is also good. These are not fancy places. Al Beccafico in Campo Santo Stefano is a step up and good. Da Arturo and Da Fiore, of course, but quite $$$, among others.

The OP will be in Venice for 1.5 days. Given that, the Pinault collections are not worth it. They would be just about last on my list of things to do in Venice.

Yes, nice view. The view from the campanile on San Giorgio is even more spectacular but of course there is no bar up there!

I like the Hotel Kette, which is small, comfortable, on a quiet back canal and just a 5 minute walk from San Marco.

i think one thing that throws a lot of visitors to venice is that it's not REALLY italian. i mean, of course it is, technically, but culturally it's very much ... venetian. part italian, part turk, lots of austrian ... i think most american's stereotypical view of italy is (if favorable) florence or (if unfavorable) naples. you don't go to venice expecting sundappled vineyards.

If you want to avoid the hordes, try the Ai Mori d'Oriente in the old Jewish Ghetto. A 15-20 minute walk from the bustle of Rialto, San Marco, etc., but it feels like a world away. Plus a great bar. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...ce_Veneto.html
