Pipe Tobacco

Any pipe smokers? I see there's a pinned cigar thread but there must be a fair few pipe smokers as well?!

I smoke one once in a while. Still smoke cigars for the most part, but a pipe is really nice once in a while when just relaxing and wanting something different. Love the smell. One thing is for sure, you better not smoke any cigars after the pipe because it just makes them taste like shit.

I think I prefer the pipe because there's greater variety in tobaccos (and it's much cheaper!). Any particular blend you like?

Sure is cheaper! I can't really say what I like for sure because I've only tried a couple of blends from the local shops. Minimum purchase is 1oz...

A bit new to the world of pipe tobacco, but I have had some Nat Sherman Empire English and Dunhill Nightcap. Both were pretty good, really enjoyed the Nightcap. A friend recently gave me some Rum Flake from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co., and I plan to enjoy it sometime this weekend.

I've been considering giving pipe smoking a try for some time, it looks so relaxing and contemplative. I tried a hookah pipe on NYE with cherry tobacco, but I could taste very little cherry. Is it just a case of smoking a bit more until you can pick up the flavour better? What are good starting flavours? That rum one that was just mentioned sounds good...

With aromatics the cherry flavor will be all in the aroma. You might get some from the smoke but very little.

Haven't smoked in months but I prefer it to cigars. Have a number of good pipes and some good as balls tobacco that's been aging in tins. Might was well start to sell that I suppose (the tins I mean. Contents, if any, are incidental and meant for collector's purposes only etc).

I'm not a fan of aromatics. Generally I smoke two different GL Pease blends. One English one Virginia.

aromatics do suck.

Which Pease blends? May have some with about five or more years of aging in the tin if you're intereted.

That is pretty much the case. The more complex flavours are found in English blends, which are non-aromatic. In the case of aromatics I can't really recommend one because I normally smoke English blends.

Unfortunately given the enormous amount of regulation and tax that's placed on tobacco there's an enormous divide between what you can get in the UK / Europe and the United States, however, saying that I hear Frog Mortons by McClelland's is a good light English blend to try.

My fave is Telegraph Hill, but I switch between that and Kensington.

the Nightcap is very strong and I disliked it at first. Other than that, I tried a unflavored tobacco of which I can't recall the name and am currently smoking skandinavik white, which smells like vanilla -- heh. I'm quite new to pipe smoking, though, but still prefer cigars for what is worth

Has anyone ever got any stick for smoking a pipe in public? That is, got any stick because of your age (I'm 23)?
