Mikael Akerfeldt is up there on my list. Watershed is quite awesome. Though I doubt most people would take that suggestion seriously.

Pete Doherty. Mind-boggingly he is relatively unknown in North America. In Europe he has a cult like following with legions of fans, and rightly so in my opinion.

Right on.... the Libertines & Babyshambles are not well known in N. America, and Doherty has a very poetic way about his writing. Along those lines I would also add Mike Doughty formerly of Soul Coughing. His acoustic guitar based albums since SC disbanded are some of my favorite and he certainly has a way with words. Lastly, I'll add Jason White... from the Janglers in Cleveland, OH now in Nashville..... www.jasonwhitemusic.com.... "Red Rag Top" was recorded by Tim McGraw but the original is much better.... check it out, think you'll like!
