truths and myths about skipping breakfast

Whats the story with skipping breakfast?

I skip breakfast every morning during the week because i cycle to work and a) dont like cycling on a full stomach b) dont have time to make a nutritional breakfast (nb i dont count grains to be nutritious).

when i get to work i drink a double espresso and dont eat to lunch.

all the arm chair nutritionists tell me i am ruining my metabolism - is this true? wouldnt the coffee kick start my metabolism?

is 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' just another nutrition myth?

Depends. If you need breakfast to help you stay full enough in order to avoid eating garbage, its needed.

Otherwise: as long as you hit your macros every 24 hrs or so, you're good.

Personally I like a bit of food in me so I don't get hungry until lunch, I focus better, but thats what works for me. It's psychological/comfort, not physiology.

Your brain runs on glucose, and when you wake up from not having eaten anything for 5-8 hours, you need to refuel your blood sugar to maintain optimal mental alertness and capabilities. (You don't need to eat sugar, obviously, because the body will convert everything it needs for your brain into glucose anyhow.) In other words: not eating in the morning makes you a dull boy. At this point I will predict a response along the lines of "Lol whatever broseph, I drink coffee, and it's a mental stimulant, so I don't need glucose!" There is more to nutrition than just your abs and arms.

ive not noticed getting duller but i dont suppose its something you would necessarily notice. i do use my brain a fair bit at work - strangely enough i feel most dim witted soon after lunch when i get my afternoon lulls. can your body create glucose from body fat supplies?

the only reason i mentioned coffee was in relation to metabolism as supposedly coffee speeds it up whereas skipping breakfast slows it down.

i find it strange that you started your post trying to be helpful and ended it just being patronising

It's not that it slows you down. Eating breakfast ramps you up. If you don't eat your body just tries to coast.

Sorry, that was definitely not the intent. Nor was my reply about coffee aimed at you specifically, though I see how it could easily have been interpreted that way. I have spent too much time on CE lately, and it's made my posting style very defensive.

If you're not having a problem skipping breakfast (e.g., feeling lethargic or have excess-weight), then don't worry with it. Everyone has a different cortisol (a steroid hormone responsible for gluconeogenesis, or creating blood sugar from fat) cycle, most just average to an approximately morning peak. Most people get a lull after eating around noon, especially if they eat a caloric-intensive meal, or a meal containing tryptophan. That's nothing unusual, and caffeine or exercise is a common remedy.

This most important thing is this advice is for you, assuming you are having none of the aforementioned problems. If you are, then yes, skipping breakfast might be attributing to those problems, as it is generally been clinically proven to be associated with negative eating habits that lead to obesity. There is a stark difference between health advice for unhealthy people and healthy people, and why this causes so much confusion, I'll never understand.

Just eat an apple or something. Hell, when I am eating super-clean, I just pan fry up a salmon burger from TJs for some O3s. Don't need to make breakfast complicated.

what you eat for breakfast DOES affect your metabolism the rest of the day. eating sugar for breakfast will give you a hyper-vigilant insulin response for the rest of the day, its better to eat fat during the early day.

Please provide a reference where a high glucose/fructose diet in the morning turns your pancreas into a hormone batman.

Does eating pussy, or watching eating pussy in the morning before work count as breakfast?

what about clam digging in the morning - then tasting the sauce?

this is a trick to fool your body you're consuming food in the morning:

what was the question again?

If I must digress, (my apologies) I and many others showed up at more than a few 5 AM crew practices drunk or recovering from the night before. And these practices were 2+ hrs long of intense bullshit. If you are mentally prepared you can do some shit.
