USED NINJA 250r purchase price.

Hey Guys,

I couldn't really find a better place to post this, but I'm sure some of you guys ride bikes and/or have knowledge of the current prices. If you guys could give me any advice, whether it be about haggling a dealer, or whatnot, please do contribute. This is my first 'major' purchase, and any help is appreciated.

I'm looking to buy a used ninja 250, preferably '08. On average, what would be a good price to pay for the bike, assuming normal wear and tear, no major damage/drops. Would I be able to haggle a dealer from 2999$ to about 2500$? Assuming I was able to haggle the dealer to 2500$, what would be my approximate out the door cost?

Thanks!

2500 seems about right...but in all honesty how long do you intend to keep the bike for?

250's get old pretty fast. they're comparable to training wheels.

if you're able to save a bit more i'd wait it out and get an 00-05 cbr 600rr or something similar. it'll be a good starter bike as long as you use your head and it'll provide plenty more for when you're ready to move up to a bigger bike.

The 250R is a good starter bike, but don't let that discourage you. Tons of beginners get into accidents by buying a much stronger bike at first, and motorcycling is not something you want to get an accident in. Smaller bikes allow more room for error. Get the Ninja if you see a good price. It's fairly easy to maintain, the recent models have better wheels/brakes, and you will always find a buyer for Ninjas when it's time to upgrade. I would not go above 500cc for a beginner.

I started on a 500r. There is always a market for those starter bikes. I payed 2k for a 10 yr old with 10K miles, drove it for 2.5 years, then sold it for 2500K.

The 500r looks dated . I'm just looking for a little sport bike to get me around town during the summer, since the weather in southern California is amazing. I'm not looking for a bike that can hit triple digits in <10 seconds. A used 250r costs almost nothing to insure as well, so that's a plus for me. (Broke college student)

I had a 250 for a while, but I actually learned on a VFR.

I'd say I prefer the half-faired SV650 to start with - the v-twin config just has more torque for getting around town, there aren't expensive plastics to mess up, the aftermarket support is awesome (versus the 250 which nobody bothers to spend money on after). You will never, ever really outgrow that bike.

Of course this depends on you - if you think you'll end up racing buddies and doing stupid crap - then the 250 is probably the right bike - but if you were that sort of person, you'd probably be buying a gixxer for your first bike anyway.

If you do buy a 250, have the fuel mix adjusted to be a bit richer - like 2.5 turns on the fuel mix screws. Kawasaki leans out the fuel a lot to meet emissions.
