Restaurant in New Orleans

I am headed to New Orleans in a couple of days and am looking for recommendations for places to eat - have tried lots of the usual touristy places like Gallatoires, Antoines, etc. Am keen to get any suggestions for places that are frequented by people who really live there.

There's really no such thing as a great New Orleans restaurant that isn't "touristy." If it's great, word gets out pretty quickly. Sure, there are hole in the wall type places that are good but you'd be missing out on some great food at the other well known places. For instance, the ones listed above are very good but very well known by tourists. Try Cochon as well.

Was just in NO for the first time.

Luke has the best shrimp and grits in town. IMO

Cochon is a must.

August is good if you want the real fine dining experience.

NOLA was riding past glory.

Don't worry about "touristy", NO is a tourist town.

Focus on good.

Love Surrey's for breakfast—awesome shrimp & grits. (I haven't had it at Luke's, but Surrey's would be hard to beat.) For all-around good eats in the Garden District, I vote for Joey K's. For a great romantic dinner, try Lilette.

cochon's good, but i don't think of it as particularly no. if someone popped me down in time for dinner, i'd go with either galatoire or commander's. everybody knows about them, but everybody knows about them because they're practically perfect at what they do.

I love the Bon Ton Cafe, but I've only had lunch there. Beyond that, +1 to foodguy's comments.

Went to K-Paul's last time I was there. Not impressed.


EDIT: Bon Ton is closed on the weekends. New Orleans is a very odd place.

Herbsaint. Clancy's is a fire local place that isn't touristy. EDIT: +1 for Surrey's brunch. Slim Goody's is also good breakfast.

yeah, i had a great meal at herbsaint. do locals still go to brightsen's? i used to go there right after it opened and it was really terrific. ate there on my last visit and it was ... good.

+1 to lilette. My favorite in the city. I don't like galatoire's, but I have heard that it is highly dependent on what you order.

maybe also expectations. galatoire's serves food that you won't find anyplace but new orleans. it is resolutely not modern and not cleaned and lightened up. but i still think about some fried pompano i had there once.

Brigsten's is still excellent and is still frequented predominantly by locals, as are most Uptown establishments. Your experience at Galatoire's is highly dependent on who you are. I will third August. Stein's Deli is the best (only?) Jewish deli in NOLA. Best pastrami I've ever had.

Muriel's, NOLA, Le Foret, and Delmonico are some other good ones too.
