Does butchering mean it started out alive, or was it skinned and you broke it down?

Hopefully it started out alive in any event. I labor under the apprehension that dressing is gutting and (sometimes) skinning, while butchering is everything else. But I wait for correction.

I think dressing is used more with wild game than ranch animals, but the distinction is correct. It is generally processing vs. butchering in these instances.

Processing is such a mild euphemism. I should have known that, as I live near a rather large pig processing plant. I also live in huntin' country (and I do, though I have not in some time), so it is not surprising that I should think of 'dressing.'
