not only this, but i have a good friend whose family business is the export of saffron. he keeps telling me about all these french and spanish companies come buy a bunch in bulk then 'cut it' with their own hay of a saffron to double the volume and market it as spanish/french.
afghanistan also produces excellent saffron but the main export there is of course derived from another plant whose products are more profitable, presumably because of the risks and legal issues...
