Insomnia (1997 Swedish film)

Has anyone seen this? Christopher Nolan did a remake in 2002 with Al Pacino and Robin Williams. I watched the original tonight (1997, with the tremendous Stellan Skarsgard starring) and it was definitely better than Nolan version. The cinematography is fabulous. Stark, harsh Norwegian landscapes with penetrating light that will make you nauseous at times. And Skarsgard's performance is just great, he absolutely sold this film. Really recommend it. I watched the Criterion edition which is beautiful.

Of course this movie was great. That's why Nolan remade it.

I agree that the original was better than the remake. Skarsgard was incredible. He was everything that Pacino just wasn't. The cinematography was indeed amazing. Your comment re: the light (sometimes nauseating) is spot-on.

Funny you posted this today; re: Scandinavian noir I've been on a Henning Mankell binge lately. Great books, and the BBC/PBS "Wallander" films with Branagh as Kurt Wallander were very good.

Didn't like it. It felt very sterile and desolate to me.

Nolan version sucked. Though I did enjoy the Robin Williams casting a lot. Very interested in the original though.
