This is why newspapers suck

Well, this and the internet...

But I've been a loyal LA Times Thursday - Sunday Subscriber for 6+ years now, I like having my breakfast, reading an article and getting smart(er). And at about $150 a year delivered to my 3rd floor apartment, the cost is very reasonable to me.

Problem is I never fully enjoy it because they all come in a 4 day period, then I get 3 days off reading old news or nothing at all. At least one paper a week goes untouched.

I called to see if I could just do Sunday, Wednesday & Friday service and they said it simply wasnt an option. I'd pay the same amount, I just dont need ALL THAT NEWS at once. Im not Charlie Sheen, my brain cant handle it.

The guy is already delivering daily, so why cant I choose a la carte service? Do any papers do this?

Or should I just get a weekly news magazine subscription instead? I DO NOT want a kindle or other electronic gizmo.

I identify with OP. I get the paper delivered to my office, and I read M-F on my lunch break, but even when I'm in on weekends I don't read the local paper Sat. or Sun., so it's a complete waste. But they won't let me order only workday subscription. I suspect the reason for this is because too many delivery options would implode the brains of the stoner kids they've got delivering these things.

Buy it at a newsstand. The paper is really only a prop nowadays.

also identify. i recently canceled because they delivered at ~11am... when i'm at work.

i'm not going to read about developments that were news at the beginning of the day (could be old news by the end of the day). it's just easier to go to google news or the online versions and just read through it.

I agree, I with they could just send me the front page and sports section on Fridays. I've literally got 5 Costco boxes full of papers.

if you want a serious response, here's the take of someone who's been in daily journalism for going on 40 years now. paper newspapers are a sinkhole. We lose money on every single one we throw. and big money: subscription fees cover about 30% of the cost of physically producing the paper. Really, the only reason they're still around is that advertisers overwhelming prefer them, and that's where the overwhelming percentage of newspaper income comes from. Last time i talked to somebody in advertising (and it's been a while ... at big papers anyway, the "chinese wall" is alive and well) ... print advertising pays more than 100X more than online for the same set of eyes. get that multiple down to 50, or even 10 and it's a whole new ballgame, finance-wise.
