Getting pants tapered & Boston tailor

Does anyone have advice or instructions for the tailor when getting chinos and jeans tapered?

is it enough to tell them the leg opening width ie 7 inches or should you give more detailed requirements?

Incidentally does anyone know any excellent tailors in the boston area?

I've only been to J.Press in Harvard square. Ask for Tad. His work is excellent.

Also in Harvard Sq. is Rizzo Tailor. One of the best in Boston, but the main guy (Joe, I think) has strong opinions about "correct" tailoring and the prices aren't cheap.

i go to a guy in newton, right outside the city, Al's tailoring
he used to work in house at Louis boston and now has his own shop.
he's old world italian, knows his shit and will give you his opinion if you're open to it. he's a super nice guy.
I've had him repair jackets (lining) and hem pants/jeans. always good work and relatively cheap.

Gary from Drinkwater's also has a guy that does some alterations. Most of my experience has been in the Cambridge area, including Simeon's in Central Square and another tailor in Central square, the name escapes me right now

I've also heard about a guy in Porter Square -- Jack the Tailor (also the name of the business). Haven't been myself, but I hear he's pretty good.

I need a similar job done. Should I bring photos for the tailor? Or will he know what to do when I say "I want a tapered slim leg with an 8inch opening" The guy I go to is pretty good but he has been known to fuck up if not given clear instructions.

I bring my jeans to Alan Rouleau at 73 Newbury-he really does mostly custom clothing but will do your alterations if you call him> he tapers my jeans so I have the exact same boot cut with the same stitching and hem. You can't even tell they have been worked on-his number is 617-424-7848-tell him you found him on this thread.

also tell them where you want to get them tapered from--the knee, thigh, etc.
