currently i am planning to get a made to measure Ermenegildo Zegna (su misura i believe)

this will be my first made to measure suit i would be going to place the order in april so I still have a month to prepare on what should i be getting

the guy said the only way to get a slim fit cut E Zegna is from custom make.. he also said for 3333$usd , i will get a free custom make E Zegna shirt and ties all made in italy , so its definitely an offer i cannot pass but i havent place the order yet as I would like to get some advice from this forum first (he said it takes 5 weeks to complete)

this will be my 3rd suit (i have 2 suits and they are pinstripe navy and pinstripe charcoal grey)

so pinstripe is definitely out

the guy suggested that I should get a checked patterned suit since i dont have one yet

but i am thinking wether i should go for solid black first? since i dont have a solid black suit yet

but ive read in this forum that black suit is bad , what about grey suits?

but i would really prefer pattern or color that is suitable to make the jacket used for casual and the pants for office wear when they are not worn together..

any ideas or others suggestions?

This sounds like a huge mistake from start to finish. Are you sure you want to commit this very expensive and overpriced endeavor? If a ready-to-wear brand doesn't provide the silhouette you want off the rack, I think it is a huge mistake to solve the problem by going made to measure. For $3,000 USD, you could get almost any off the rack brand available (save for maybe Brioni and Kiton).

Zegna's Satorial line is already fairly slim-cut. How slim do you want it to go? They're service is keeping the proportions, I would keep to their existing cut and scaling down appropriately. Nothing worse than a sleek suit that is made even sleeker to the point of trendy-gay.

As you have pin stripes, I would recommend getting a solid suit in a lighter grey colour.

Black is good, but means you either work for McKinsey or IBM. If you are not jacketed, people may think you work in a department store of restaurant... all comes down to if you can pull off a black suit.

I think Hermes Man can pull it off.

Zegna is an overpriced brand with horrible and overshouldered designs.

AVOID.

Don't go for it unless you can get them to plaster ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA all over the fabric, maybe as an embroidery or perhaps a tasteful silkscreen.

In that case I would think about selecting a small-scale black and white houndstooth patterned cloth (with no windowpane or overcheck). Don't overestimate the extent to which officewear suit item work for mixing around, though. To be honest, the jacket of a solid blue suit, the trousers of a grey flannel suit (not necessarily together) are the only unpatterned city-suit items that are reliable for this, in my humble opinion.

Black suits aren't great for daytime, they're fine for evening, although midnight blue can actually look deeper then black at night.

Most of us wear suits to work (hence in the day). I would not be shocked if you were looking for an evening suit, in which case black might be useful to you. That said, it depends where you're going. If you're going to nightclubs, you might want a suit you won't cry so much about if some hot girl sitting on your lap spills her drink.

If you wear the pieces separately, they'll wear separately and end up as separates, imho. If you need another jacket and a pair of pants. If you can't afford a suit and another pair of pants, maybe buy a slightly less expensive suit

From your photos on your blog, I'd keep going with very dark shades - dark navy blue, dark charcoal. Basically 'off black'. Actual black tends to look a little flat, a very dark grey or midnight blue has more depth.

I would consider that many of us are tempted right from the start to get interesting patterns and textures. There is a place for them, but often we're compensating for clothes that simply aren't that good. With this suit, the cut and quality should stand out without ornamentation. So I'd consider a solid color. You'll get more versatile wear out of a solid then a check.

$3000+ for a MTM Zegna suit? You can get a much better deal than that.

Whatever you get, it pretty much has to be a solid.

Sai Loh,

Be careful with EZegna MTM.

I had 6 Zegna MTM suits and only no. 5 was bordering on acceptable. Overly padded shoulders, too long jacket and sleeves, minimal waist suppression. Cost me a lotta money and I will NOT be going that route again.

It's not that the product is bad. Zegna cloth is rather nice, and the finishing touches are splendid. However, you are entirely at the mercy of the fitter, i.e. the guy or gal who takes your measurements.

Oftentimes, this is NOT a trained and experienced tailor. Instead, you have a sales assistant or store manager who was prolly sent to Zegna's workshop in Italy to learn how to take measurements. If they absorbed the lessons well, and had lotsa practice since then... great. If not... voila: 6 ill-fitting Su Misura suits and a heap of wasted cash.

Might be a good idea to speak to people who've been measured up at the Zegna boutique in KL (KLCC or Pavilion?). Better yet, get 'em to wear their suits and examine the fit. Also, if you must go down this path, then:

a) Get a plain Charcoal or Navy, maybe one with a fine herringbone pattern for some texture;

b) Go for the Milano cut, and not the Roma. This is the slimmer of the two. Proviso 1 - the Milano has a very soft shoulder line that might not look good on you if your shoulders are drooped;

c) If you want a more flexible look, be sure to get horn buttons. Also, think about patch pockets instead of flapped ones. Proviso 2 - Patch pockets will detract from the formality of the suit, and may not look as sharp if you dress the jacket up; and

d) Make sure they get the shoulders, sleeve length, and jacket length right!!!

Cheers.

For that price you should be able to get good true bespoke from a variety of quality tailors. Or, if you're after MTM, there are far better priced alternatives out there, hermes.
