Ha, yes. Unfortunately, it seems that the wax has done its damage. It was burgandy colored wax on snuff suede. The other two shoes had eraser-sized drops that (mostly) came off after being frozen. I scraped it off the best that I could.

This one shoe is basically ruined, I think.

It's also had grease and pizza on the same spot on the toe. I think that it's somewhat jinxed...

It is not ruined. The worst case would be that it has to be died dark to cover the stain. But the wax and oil can definitely be removed with time and effort. Now that I see the pictures I can tell you it will take some effort though.

Candle wax will melt off in super hot soapy water. While the suede is wet you should avoid heavy brushing and focus more on dabbing with a clean cloth to remove the wax.

Did you end up with 'fullers earth' when you cleaned that pizza stain? (I seem to remember that episode)

They are good shoes. And will even look good in a more rugged state if that is how they end up. So personally I'd not give up on them.

May I presume the candle is in a 'safe place' now?

Ha, yes. The votives are back in their holders and the candles moved away from my shoe rack.

I will see what I can do with shampoo. I'm headed to a leather store this afternoon to pick up some Obenauf's for my Red Wing boots, so I'll see what kind of suede cleaner they have. I know the Kirby Allison has some from Saphir, too.

Those spray leather cleaners are essentially dry cleaning fluid. they won't be very effective until the wax is removed. They will help remove the oily stain part but the wax will repel the cleaner.

Don't know much about the Saphir versions Kirby carries - but I'm sure he could make recommendations for you.

Leather on my EG Asquith feel a little sticky. I tried renovateur and it still feels a little tacky. Any ideas?

Hello kind Sirs,

Off topic, but I thought I could ask:

My wife's rather old Mulberry bag had these rain stains, so I thought it could use some renovateur. I used it twice within a few days, brushed/buffed, same as I do with my shoes. The stains are still there, which is fine, but the leather looks much better now, it needed the nourishment.

However, the following day I noticed this white residue which will not brush off.

Any ideas? Thanks

Renovateur? On the whole bag? That's kind of waste IMO. I would personally wash it with Lexol cleaner and nourish it with Lexol conditioner instead. For the white spots try brushing harder and faster.

I have used both dubbin grease from saphir and Lexol on my girlfriends handbags with success.

Before and after - lexol cleaner/conditioner then a shoe cream. Just need to get some sole dressing.

I did not have Lexol at hand, so thought it made sense to use renovateur.

I'll try brushing again, hopefully it's just some reno residue. Which by the way has not happened in other similarly textured leathers, this is why I was confused in the first place.

On the nourishment side, look for Venetian Shoe Cream too (I don't know an SF affil who carries it, so google away). Much better than Lexol, not quite as good as Reno, but a much better bargain; you can get a big tin of it, like 32oz, for about $12 or so. It's not as rich but is in the same league as Reno. But, since the $/oz is so much more reasonable than Reno, you can use the heck out of it on large projects like this. Plus it doesn't require anywhere near the buffing that Reno does (probably because it's not as rich as Reno).

I hit our bags with it about once a year and they smile for it.

Problem is shipping cost outside of the U.S., when looking for it the cheapest I could find was $40-$50 shipped to Europe, and that was the 5oz bootle.

Let them sit for a week or so and then buff with a clean cloth. Probably just a little over conditioned. The hot, dry, heated indoor air of winter will probably dry them right up.
