I just picked up the Islays. This makes my second pair of C&J after the Westboure.

Do those of you with the Islay wear them in the snow and rain? I plan on wearing them on rainy and snowy days. They look like they can handle it. How well does the leather handle scuffs and bumps?

They'll be fine in snow and rain. I treat mine accordingly (I use Obenauf's LP but others might use Snoseal) and they're doing fine.

Hello gentleman -

First time poster on the thread. After browsing thru all the fantastic pictures of the islay boot on the thread, now I really want one!

I have looked into pediwear and bodileys and was wondering if the thrifty shoppers here knew of any other options that are cheaper?

I also have a friend in London at the moment and that could be an option. Any suggestions on that route (which stores etc) would be welcomed.

Pediwear, Bodiley's, and even directly from the C&J store is probably the most reliable one. If you don't have to buy now, waiting for sales is another option, although there is no guarantee with them. Good luck, they are great boots.

Perhaps the gentleman/gentlewoman from CJ can assist me with this. I recently inquired about getting the alex constructed to handgrade specifications, the price I was given with $1250. USD. I certainly understand and am willing to pay a premium for this service however I cannot fathom doubling the cost of the shoe. I really like the product and I'm not special ordering anything of of the ordinary, same last etc. The weymouth is the same shoe minus the brogue for $780.00 USD. I really had my heart set on a handgrade Alex.

They're a pair of Richard James shoes by C&J. Do shoemakers tend to put out a product of equal quality when working behind another brand?

Supposedly, they are handgrade. The channeled soles are a confirmation of this, I believe - are there benchgrade shoes with channeled soles? Are there other details evident of handgrade craftmanship?

Handgrades á £250 feels like a steal.

I finally have a pair of Skyes on order.

I had been waiting to get these until my Islay pre order, which had been ordered through a reputable independent retailer, had been paid for. The boots finally arrived at the retail shop a week and a half ago, which was a month later than originally estimated. I was on vacation and sick with the flu, didn't check my gmail account until my niece, who was dog and house sitting for me, let me know that someone had IMd me. So I checked my mail and I had missed a couple emails from the retailer, first two letting me know that the boots were in and that he needed my credit card info again because it had been so long and the transaction had expired. The next message was insulting and went on stating his assumptions that I had bought from another retailer out of impatience, so he cancelled my order. After contacting him and letting him know that he was wrong, he became apologetic and offered to fulfill my order as the boots were still in. I declined on principal. Which made my wife happy beacuse the money I had set aside for these boots since December would now be available for her to add to her Louis Vuitton purse fund, this bought her one with a strap. Naturally I was overjoyed.



Anywho, it was payday this past Friday and I still owed myself the birthday present that the Islays had represented. I decided my late birthday present would now be the Skyes, since I want them more than the Islays.So I contacted Yukiko at the Burlington Arcade store, whom I first spoke with when I was deep in my original search for the Islay and again when I was needing information on the Skyes. This morning she let me know that the price of the Skyes had went up £29.15 since she first quoted me the price in late January. This brought them to over $700 US after you factor in shipping, import fees, and Dainite conversion. That's Alden cordovan territory, and ravello and whiskey are tempting colors. Also, I know my size down pat in Alden's Barrie last.

I said screw it and bit the pricey bullit on the Skyes, because they're so damned beautiful. I will pray every day until their arrival that they fit.

Moral of the story for me is, if you want something get it when works best for you and don't feel obligated to to hang onto a pre order with someone just because they seem cool and helpful, because they may end up being a douche and the price may rise on something you were wanting more. Oh, and go through C&Js Burlington Arcade store, because they are wicked awesome.

If you plan on ordering from Bodileys I would order them ASAP because there is a wait-list. I am on the July waitlist and I ordered my Selbournes last week. I found Bodileys to be about 200 USD cheaper then if I was to order them from the C&J store in NY and since i don't need them right away it is worth the wait.
