I heard back from S&H regarding that canvas at the front:

"Yes that is correct. The front part of this particular shoe is canvas lined. We have had these made for us for 25 years by Crockett and Jones and they tell me that it makes no difference to the wear of the shoe and in fact does give some ‘breathability’ advantages. The other shoes they make for us are fully leather lined, but not this one."

If it honestly makes no difference in the wear of the shoe I'll keep 'em. I'm just worried the canvas will wear out and tear greatly shortening the life expectancy of the shoe. What do y'all think - keep them or exchange them for something else?

Thanks C&J, but I think you accidentally skipped my question.

Are the Shipton & Hineage shoes made to Handgrade standards, or below?

For $385 are you serious? biggrin.gif

Meant benchgrade; thanks for catching that.

In other news, I found CJ handgrades for under £300...Once my pair is ordered, I'll let you guys know where to find them satisfied.gif

Pulled my pull tab right off my Somervilles today. Damn. I guess I should have loosened the laces a bit more before trying to slide into the right boot. Glad fall weather has arrived, but I wish I had been a little less enthusiastic about getting my boots on for the first time this season.

At least the new coat of saphir mahogany cream looks good.

I had a pair of Church's with canvas lining and after years of wear, the area by my distal toe wore the linen down. It never really affected the uppers but it did bother me once in a while that I coulf feel the difference.

FYI, I've updated the Harlech MTO thread. Whiskey cordovan is available, so the current plan is Harlech, whiskey, all eyelets, storm welt, double leather. Let me / the thread know if you're interested.

Hello, I want to order Northcote boots. I had some trouble finding my correct size for the 348-last but 7,5UK seems to give me the best fit after some wear (I have Westbourne Oxfords in this size).

I was wondering if I can trust that a Northcote in 7,5UK will give me exactly the same fit as my Westbourne's in 7,5UK do. Both are on the 348-last so I suppose they will fit identical.

Maybe a stupid question but better safe than sorry in this price category :)

Thx!

Nope, a mate of mine has the Alex in 7.5 but the Northcote in size 7. As the Northcote is a boot and a Derby its a little more roomy. Much will depend on your instep.
I'm not saying you should size down 1/2, I'm saying you might have to.
Sorry, I'm being the opposite of helpful.

good points - i second this. when i went tts, it felt roomy. I think id prefer the snug fit of sizing down 1/2 size

At inimitable and chipshot and others interested in the whiskey cordovan loafer. I heard back from C&J. Here's what they quoted me.

$800 (£495) for a batch over six
vs.
$1200 (£750) for a single shoe - no batch order

Looks like a no-go considering the Ben Silver price ($875). Only a marginal discount. Disappointing considering the Harlech boot was going for less when quoted to Hoit. (Much better "bang for buck" - they're using more cordovan)
