Can anyone tell me if these are the same boots? (apart from color) I think C&J makes most if not all of New and Lingwood's shoes.

They aren't the same, no. C&J make some of N&Ls stuff but other makers abound.

+1. If you look carefully where the strap is connected to the vamp, the brown boots have a triangular shaped stitch pattern whereas the Cottesmore does not have the same stitching. Actually wearing my pair today.

Anyone know how this leather compares to NTL CXL? I has similar properties (e.g., texture) but appears to darken much quickly. For example, the pair that I tried had darker shades where it creases on the vamp. Actually prefer to keep them with a lighter color. Anyone own these for a period of time and did the color stay the same?

Negative.
Somerville does not have eyelets, quick lacing hooks, quarterbroguing, and is suede above the lower vamp.
It's a completely different boot, although I can't identify it.

Somerville is a style - the leather combos can change. Currently the suede/leather is in stock, but I've seen it through Barney's here in the states and other outlets in all leather.

Alden seemed a little too close/similar, so the next stop seemed to be Crockett and Jones. I am looking for something in a light brown, sort of a "cognac" color. As a reference, I would prefer if it were lighter than Allen Edmonds Walnut.

I have narrowed it down to a few options: Dover, Drummond, Westbourne, and Rosemoor. I would like something on the sleeker side, lace-up, with a leather sole. I am OK with either Derby/Blucher or Oxford/Balmoral.

Can anyone shed some insight as to whether or not those models would be what I am looking for, or suggest some others? Also, what is the best way to buy these? There is a Crockett and Jones store in NYC, but it looks like I can get them cheaper on Pediwear. The current exchange rate puts them at about $500 for benchgrade. Does the NYC store have any upcoming sales? I am not in a hurry, so I don't mind waiting.

Edit: What upgrades am I looking at coming from Allen Edmonds? Will the leather and build quality be better or about the same? The styling definitely seems sleeker, at least on some of the models I have seen.

I think the Rosemoor is very nice and I believe it is made in a tan color. All the other shoes are also great and I guess they would come down to fit. Some are on the 348 which is a longer last so maybe try it out to see if it works for you (for some it is too long). If you can drop by the C&J store I'd recommend it to see the shoes first hand. Typically ordering from the UK is cheaper (if you don't get hit with fees) and Pediwear is reputable source. The difficulty is stock because the waitlist might be months. If you don't mind paying the 30 gbp shipping, you can just order directly from one of C&J's stores in the UK. I believe the sale just ended in NYC but Barney's still have a handful of C&J on sale if you want to check it out since it is walking distance from C&J.

Build quality will be a similar spec - but much better quality control. Leather on the uppers will be better. Stitching and details should be better as well. And as you mentioned - the lasts and the styling are much more sophisticated. Here are my Drummonds in tan.






As DSMIVTR mentioned this is a long lasted shoe. And the 348 runs pretty large in general. You really need to try on a pair to make sure the sizing is good for you.

The Westbourne was on sale at Barney's last weekend. It's possible your size may still be in stock if you can call or go to their NYC flagship store. The price was pretty unbeatable at $289 I believe. Normally around $575 I think.

I have the Westbourne (benchgrade) and the Somerville (handgrade) along with Alfred Sargent (premier) and Alden and Allen Edmonds shoes. I find the AE's the most pedestrian (pun intended) in terms of sleekness, quality, and construction. They are almost like sausages, with little shape and a very pronounced sole extending beyond the vamp. Aden are a little sleeker, but the leather quality seems better to my eye and they seem to be a little more supportive, but that could just be the last shape and my foot shape.

My AS are slip ons, so they aren't really comparable, other than to say the leather is still nicer than Alden.

The C&J benchgrades are the same leather quality as the AS, but the heel is sleeker (smaller than the heel counter). It's significantly more narrow throughout than my Aldens, but that's purely a function of last shape. Hampton versus 348.

My C&J handgrade are nicer still. The leather has a suppler quality to it and the waist is narrower without the last being narrower throughout. They are the most comfortable shoes I own.
