As per a research, there are about 85 million people who are suffering from the symptoms of baldness. The commonest form of baldness is called androgenic alopecia, also referred as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. Although same terms are used for both males and females, there are some differences in baldness pattern.

Balding process starts with hair loss, but, gradually after few years, hair keeps getting thinner and thinner - until one day when only a few remains. The main cause of baldness is the human hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT clings to the receptors of hair follicles restricting the flow of essential nutrients to them. In other words, it blocks supply of blood to the scalp which passes on the required nutrients to the hair. With the lack of essential nutrients, hair growth stops, and thus hair- fall starts. By and by, the number of hair on scalp becomes thinner and thinner.

There are many medications to overcome baldness. Most of the hair-fall medications make use of active ingredient known as Finasteride. This active ingredient lowers the level of DHT which is the primary cause for hair loss. However, such medicines have their own set of side effects.

Another alternative for hair loss is natural supplements. Some natural ingredients are Saw Palmetto (a herbal DHT blocker), and extract of pumpkin seeds (which put a stops to the conversion of testosterone into DHT).
