...and not with legs lying on the ground?

Better ergonomic position - puts less stress on your lower back. Better yet, do them with your legs raised off the ground. Retains the ergonomic position for your lower back and makes the exercise harder.

it's best to do ab exercises on a curved surface like a swiss ball. your spine isn't straight it's more s curved. most people don't hit the lower abs when they do crunches even if you do it on a incline

do all different kinds of crunches, leg raises, leg lifts, reverse crunches, front, side & back planks, on the floor, on a medicine ball, on a bench. Keep it fresh and keep challenging yourself with differen routines.
