Shaving cleanly above your lip without razor burn?

Does anyone have trouble with their upper lip?

If I don't go against the grain on my upper lip...I always have a 5:00 shadow and it looks like I have a dirtstache. If I go against the grain...it's clean...but I get razor bumps, defeating the purpose.

You should go with grain first, then across grain, then against. Separately and re-apply shave cream/soap each time. Something about going with and across before you do the against grain keeps most people from getting the burn.

On this subject, I just started shaving with a safety razor and with using a brush/real shave soap this week and I can't believe I ever bothered with those multi-blade cartridge razors. That's a shit-ton of money that I'll never be spending again. Badger hair brushes are the shit too.

yeah, i am that immature....

find something to combat the razor bumps, try a DE razor perhaps? Been using that for some time now and it does shaving closer and cleaner than the mach3's I used in the past..

Hair type matters. If you are black, the advice would change. I'm boggling at the idea of shaving any part of one's face in three different directions, wow.

+1 on rec to shave with, then across, then against the grain. I almost always need to go against the grain to get as close as I want to. But before going there, I make a pass or two with the grain. Going directly against the grain on the first pass is a recipe for irritation. Also, never go "dry" against the grain. Always have some kind of moisture in place, be it oil or cream or soap. Dry shaving against the grain will just scratch up your skin and lead to bumps and ingrown hairs.

I think the best way to avoid a razor burn is to make sure ou use a good quality blade, but good preperation is also key.
Make sure you wash with warm/hot water to soften the hair then a good quality shave gel or foam.
Go with the grain and then wash thoroughly. A good post shave balm will also help.
