Cheaney Factory Repair

A lot of members often ask for opinion on factory repair/refurbishments, I'd thought I'd share some pictures and thoughts on the Cheaney Factory Repair service. The boots in question are a pair of Cheaney Carlton, purchased in Aug 2006. They've had moderate wear over that time and last September went in for repair. I specified they be resoled with Oak Bark soles. These pictures are of the shoes the day they were dropped off at the factory shop in Desborough. A small hole had appeared in the sole.

After 7 weeks they were ready. (They've subsequently been worn once) They were re-lasted, heels, soles, welts, cork filler removed. The uppers were re-finished, new welts, soles & heels. New heel sock. Total cost £80.00. Excellent value imo.

Looking good!

I wonder, originally the boots had soles stitched aloft, now after the refurbishment, they are channelled (and have a painted waist).
Did you ask for it especially, or was that just the way Cheaney did it?

If you did ask for it, are there different prices for channelled and non-channelled soles (as with Crockett & Jones)?

Their oak bark soles are always channelled. Had the very same done by Cheaney to a pair of my own shoes, and they came back covered in edge dressing!

Thanks.

Requesting Oak Bark results in the sole finish you see, it's just the way Cheaney do it.

I believe it's £65-70 for a regular repair, £80 for Oak Bark, although that has now probably changed with the VAT and whatnot.

Very impressive. I have a pair that will need a re-sole soon, but I recently had them re-heeled locally - am I right in thinking they'll refuse to take them because of that?

There shouldn’t be a problem with just a heel repair, there isn’t a lot that can go wrong (let alone cause lasting damage to the shoes).

Cheaney is underrated. Or maybe Church's and C&J bench-grade are overrated.

Many thanks, that's good to know. I'll give them a ring and see what they say.

AS Bengal says a re-heel is fine. I've had many pairs re-heeled and then sent them in for a full resole.

Did they inform you or even keep track of the number of times you can send the shoes back for recrafting?

The reason I'm asking is because I was told by C&J that I could only re-sole my shoes one more time, which effectively puts the limit at 2 full recraftings. I wonder if this is a company wide policy or a case by case basis. I've been told that many other factories similarly don't recraft more than 2 or 3 times but am curious if they even make a point to record the number of times the shoes have been sent back.

It's a good job they do but the uppers look like they've only been polished but not refinished. I hope I'm wrong on this as my Mock Croc Cheaney boots will need redoing soon.

I was having a chat with the gentleman in the factory shop about this, he says typically a the uppers will struggle with re-lasting past the 2nd or 3rd repair, obviously wearing conditions & age have a big impact on this. Cheaney don't write in the shoe (like Church's) so I'm not sure how they keep track. The original batch numbers are still visible and unlikely to wear given their location, so maybe it's that they use.

In the past I've had Church's take 3 repairs, but, at the time the uppers were well worn and the shoes were starting to look shabby.
