Particularly interested in people's opinions on the brown cxl. Do people think it's a bit boring compared to other leathers?

I am not as much of a a fan of the ebony latigo as I expected to be, it seems a bit too dressy to me. Brown CXL is nice, but I'd probably go with Icy Mocha.

To provide a counterpoint. I am big fan of the ebony latigo, I like the look of it, how it breaks in and the color.  I personally don't see it as dressy, but my mind heads elsewhere when I see that word.

I do not love CXL and in fact would go out of my way not to buy it. Out of the CXL options I like Brown the most and the icy mocha being a variant of brown, then I would say natural and my least favorite being black, not because I am in the "I only buy brown boots" camp but because black seems to display that graininess of CXL the most robustly and that is the reason I do not like CXL all that much to begin with. That said,  I do own brown CXL Vibergs and I love the way my pair looks so far, and I have a pair of natural CXL Alden wingtips and they have turned out pretty cool as well. I just wont be buying any additional pairs.

I actually like Viberg's continued willingness to use more out of the ordinary leather like Bison, Camel and Moose.  And I always go for those before anything else,  I just wish they would do them all in stitchdown but we can't always get what we want.

Brown CXL is a classic color. Cuts of the leather differ but usually a medium brown that gets a lot of depth and character on repeat wear. Ebony Latigo is hard-wearing but I agree with Linafelt that at the start it's a dyed-through, smooth dress leather without the pull-up effect. There are loads of leathers out there though... I really like the way my nut brown service boots have developed over a year and a half, with really nice reddish overtones that's nearly a #8 in character, and a texture that the pictures doesn't capture.

But this points up the oddity to me of even talking about particular lasts corresponding to particular widths.  I always just figure that the basic version of the last is its D width, and then if there are narrower or wider versions they get labeled C or E, etc.  So, you can have lasts that are more narrow vs more wide, more shallow vs more volume, narrow heel vs wide heel, etc,  but the basic one is always D.  The 110 is a wide last because it's a wide last, not because it corresponds to some objective measurement of widths.

Red Wing's Iron Ranger to me is a long and very narrow last, but it's basic model is still a D, and it's so-called EE is about as wide as my old Chippewa's in their D version, but it's still a EE for IR's.  And White's Semi-Dress last has any number of versions from something like BBB to FF; you wouldn't identify the Semi-Dress as any particular width.  It just happens that Viberg doesn't have a wide range of widths for each last, so we've gotten into the habit of giving them widths, but we can easily imagine them making a EE version of the 2030, or a C version of the 110, etc. As far as I know, the only Viberg last that does have more than one width is the 310 (though I may be wrong about that, there may be others), but any of the lasts could.

And this is why Viberg and SF should have a last fit chart.

I passed on a great pair of bisons that were a size 12 becuase I did not know if they would fit me and I didn't want to bother with resale.

I'm a 12C in Whites Semi Dress last that fit me perfectly.  My Viberg size would be 11.5?

Thanks for all your great responses. Very helpful.

I think natural cxl is too light to be my 'sole' brown viberg boot. The ebony latigo also seems to be a rare make up.

I think I'll wait for a make up with brown cxl or chromepak with a brogued cap toe.

Sorry to add to the endless sizing questions/advice, but I was wondering if I could get some help, as I'm looking to make a pre-order on the L&F Natty CXL in the 2030 Last. Been doing my research for sizing on Vibergs for the 2030 last, and I definitely know I fall in between a size 7.5 and 8 for them, but unsure which exactly.

I'm approximately an 8.5C on the Brannock, with my arch at about a 9.5. I would be an exact 8.5 in length if it were not for my big right big toe, which is the tiniest hair's width above 8.5 length. I wear size 8's in RW Iron Rangers and Wolverine 1000 Miles which fit me pretty well, however, there is a comfortable bit of toe space with them. I can fit a 7.5 in both, except they're a little tight and slightly cramped in the toe space (mainly due to pinching on my right big toe). Never been able to try the Barrie last. Everyone here seems to be very helpful in giving guidance, so I would very much appreciate any advice!

Go for the 8, especially with the bigger right toe. Worst case scenario is they feel slightly big were you to wear dress socks- but I'm of the camp that thinks Viberg (at least the boots) are meant to be worn with thicker socks.

Cheers

Wow, really wish I had gotten a pair of those Nut Browns on the 2040... Never would have expected them to age like this. Nice.

Hmm... that's tough due to your arch length and the 2030 being a somewhat elongated last. I'm an 8.5c overall and an 8.5 arch (both measured on a Brannock) and have both 7.5 (cxl) and 8 (shell) on the 2030.

My biggest problem is arch length. I have room to spare in both boots, but the 8 works better (have to use a thick sock) specifically because the arch length feels short on the 7.5. If I put on my 7.5s sockless my ball snaps in perfectly at the arch, but with a medium sock I wear it's just a tad short - still a fair amount of toe space fwiw, just my foot feels like it's riding up the front of the boot and it's not the most comfortable thing, nor does it flex as well (both boots have north of 100 wears at this point). Personally I'd say any shorter than an 8.5 is too short, but I know many here would disagree...
