Seriously who the hell cares? I went to the post office the other day to mail out something since I didnt have stamps or envelopes at home. Yes I used a debit card for 0.58 cents but really 38 year old USPS cashier, is there really a need to comment on it? Then through the rest of the transaction she was pretty condesending, and didnt bother to ask me if I needed more stamps like ususal because I was probably too poor for it.

Then came "Do you need cashback"?

I said no.

"Are you sure? You just used a debit card for 0.58 cents. Dont you need money to go out on the weekend?".

I dont want change.

Same thing happened at a coffee shop where I charged 4 bucks or so to the debit card, really? Who cares? I dont like carrying around cash or change and my wallet is a card case.

I don't care about charging under $5 at large chain stores. Smaller joints I try to use cash if I have it, if I don't then I'll try to make sure my total is above $8 or there about.

The comment about "money for going out" isn't really condescending imo, though I was there to hear the tone. It seems more like she noticed that you didn't have any cash on you (hence your debit purchase) and thought that cash would be handy for going out on the weekend (it usually is).

My mother is one of these people. She thinks it's very weird to use plastic on a small-ish purchase.

My mother is the same. Really it should be faster than cash...many places don't make you sign for purchases under x amount. I just hate carrying change, though as mentioned above I make exceptions for individual/family-owned places if I'm out to lunch or something.

The real question is why are you using debit if you don't want cash back?

Run that **** as a credit transaction!

Be prepared to be told to go **** off while the clerk points to the sign that says no card transactions under X amount. The only form of payment that cannot be refused is cash so learn to carry some.

Can't card companies tell business owners to **** off for having those signs?

x2.

Also, I hate running credit transactions for small purchases. I try to always carry at least a double sawbuck on me at all times.

Yes. They can also cancel your agreement if you place a surchage on a purchase for using credit, i.e. cash = $10, credit = $10.40.
