linen
2. A reference, especially before the 20th century, to a man's shirt and other personal items (e.g. nightshirts); a usage that arose because such items were customarily made from linen, but continued even when they were composed of cotton or blends.

(Interesting:
In previous centuries, a change of linen was the equivalent of a modern shower: Medical men thought that wearing linen—because it absorbed sweat, smell and dirt—was a way of ridding the bodiy of impurities.)

Cotton won't grow in the UK - so yes - they used flax(linen) until it became possible to import it from the colonies. Most the of cotton grown in the American south before the war was shipped to the mills in England to be turned into cloth.

Gingham in autumn?

zomerginghammettruienvi.jpg

Is gingham considered a spring/summer pattern? This shirt is a very thin/fine cotton which will be too cold in winter for me, but I also have an oxford gingham that I wear all year round, except for the hottest summer days.

(Excuse the lazy pic.)

I'm not sure this is irrational at all. I seem to end up in a lot of places where they keep the buildings hotter in the winter than they do in the summer.

That just doesn't make any sense at all. But I like it. Do you guys every put together some nonsensical, illogical, unseasonal outfits? Feel free to post examples or photos

That particular cardigan belongs with no suit, or jacket, IMHO. It should be worn by itself.
