FWIW, my thoughts on VC as a career...most successful VCs never started their career with the "intention of landing a VC gig". A VC job IMO comes to you as opposed to you going to it. Start a company, be a successful entrepreneur, be an early employee at a hugely successful startup...that's how a VC job will come to you. Not by just attending an MBA course or working in MC / IB.

In my experience it happens both ways. One friend became a VC by business school>McKinsey>VC; another was a serial entrepreneur. They both are successful.

You have the time if you're in grad school. For us, (since my college would own a huge portion of the very modest royalties) its made very easy. It was more of a validation that I did something useful in grad school than any sort of money making opportunity. I can absolutely see how it'd be difficult as an individual though. EDIT: I should clarify. Getting the patent issued is very time consuming. You can, however, start work using the idea with a provisional and/or NDAs. That's for another thread though.

I'm curious, would that be a lateral hire at an MBB or would they be starting from the associate/consultant level? Let's assume the case of someone in their mid 30s working in industry.

In almost all cases they would start off at the associate / consultant level.

Really only matters at client meetings or partner level meetings for the most part. Typically collared shirt plus slacks are all you need. I would say that looking professional is good.

If only.
In my experience with consultants of several firms and practice areas, the phenomenon of ugly square-toed shoes has been surprisingly prominent.
