Traveling Shoes/boots

Just a time waster as I am stuck on a bus I was starting to think about if i need to buy a new pair of shoes for some up coming travel. I am traveling to Tokyo with my wife and her family in march and want to buy shoes for the trip, and I thought this was an interesting question for the men of SF.

As stated I am traveling to Tokyo in late march for 10 days and cannot bring any more than 2 pairs of shoes. I will be walking a ton including all around Tokyo and some actual hiking on trails out side of Kyoto. The weather can go any way this time of year from rain/snow to dry and warm.

To make matters worse I have to attend two semi-formal to formal events. I can probably get away with nice boots as this will be slacks but no tie type affairs.

So with those criteria in mind of just general travel experience what 1-2 pairs of shoes would people recommend for such a journey.

If any one is selling these mythical shoes/boot i am a size 10 and happy to shop for the trip

Decent DBs get me through a variety of social events while travelling - especially in leather rather than suede.

I'd bring a pair of nicer things - some sort of cap-toe/ wingtip deal for the more formal occasions, and then a leather boot you can beat up a bit with the rest of the trip walking.

I wear a medium brown bushacre boot by Clarks casually just about everywhere. Never has steered me wrong.

Not to bogart the OP but I'm in a similar quandary. Traveling with Sig O to Italy for 10 days this summer. Her first time there so wants to visit as many places as possible. Flying in and out of Rome and I will be damned if I'm going to check luggage/carry around a large bag. Trying to figure out what two pair of shoes (plus a pair of sandal's for beach) to pack. No formal events, purely a social trip.

If I were in your situation, I'd bring a pair of brown wingtips (look good with anything from jeans to a suit) and a pair of comfortable boots.

If I were you I would go with the Alden Indy Boots as well. I can't find the link but I saw this one guy who has been wearing his Indy Boots pretty much everyday, has gone through like 3 resoles... and it's just amazing. If Indiana Jones can run around in Indy Boots to do everything, you can too.

Another option to consider would be to pack light and buy whatever shoes you need while there. Tokyo probably has a better selection than anywhere else in the world and size 10 is readily available. You could mail back anything extra that won't fit into your luggage. As someone whom cares about clothing, how could you pass up this opportunity? I like to pack light (i.e. only 1 carry on bag and no checked bags) but shoes are dirty and waste too much space. So I will often bring only one pair of footwear with me-- same footwear that I wear onto the plane. Usually I'll select a pair of black boots since they can be passable in a wide variety of situations: biz-casual, jeans+tee, or walking on non-paved dirty surfaces. If you're planning to do actual hiking on trails in the mountains/wilderness, I'd pack some comfortable athletic shoes solely for that purpose. I have a pair of New Balance sneakers I use for that. Just don't plan to wear these anywhere outside of the trail.
