PSA: "Save now on Alden Shoes" - theshoemart - Page 2

I had a revelation the other day while wearing a pair of #8 longwings. While good shoes, I'm not convinced they are any better constructed than the AE shell shoes, and will hesitate to pay a premium for them going forward.

Not that $40 is a large increase when the shoes are already >$600, but the psychology of paying close to 7 is weighing on me. My next purchases will likely be EG and C&J when I'm looking for a solid, well-constructed shoe. Other than that, I'm going Vass and G&G.

I'm not seeing the value I need to justify more Alden purchases.

#8 longwings are ubiquitous enough in barely used vintage Florsheim, Hanover etc that I would never even buy new AE, never mind Alden. its an easy way to save $500 or so

When some other company makes the leisure handsewn in #8 shell, THEN we can talk about Alden bashing.

I love the spin of turning a price increase into a "sale" via current prices. That is some next-level, superplusgood doublespeak shit right there.

It's not AAF because the tone is written apologetically.

A true AAF message would have been:

"Yo son,

Best be buyin' this shit NOW, kid, 'for I jack that shit up forty bucks."

Thanks to the power of internet, we now have access to offerings from European shoe makers in the $400-600 catagory. I would buy C&J, A.S etc. over Alden anyday.

Same. The irony is that somewhere in Europe they are clamoring to get Aldens.

No, that's just GAF (Ghetto As Fuck).

I hear you guys on the prices creeping towards EG/CJ but do those makers offer a resole service like Alden? I shudder at the thought of what it would cost for EG to do a resole.

Did the baby cows go on strike?

Well at least the price increase will force Alden to tighten up their Quality ContrAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Whoops sorry must've lost my cool.

That price is really steep for an Alden. I got a pair of Vass for 600USD.

That's not what I said. $40 obviously doesn't put anything out reach, but I think $600+ is a crazy amount to pay for a pair of shoes in the first place. Being a small-timer, I've never spent over $250 on a pair. I was slowly trying to justify purchasing a pair of $600 shoes to myself. If the price gets closer to $700, it's like a mental process I have to start all over again. I assume all of the cheapskates here on SF can understand this, as people regularly tell posters not to pay $200 for a pair of Allen Edmonds because, if you hold out for a few months and stalk ebay and B&S non-stop, you can get a used pair for $120.

I think that is probably what reidrothchild is trying to say. At least that is what I think.

This too.
