Steve McQueen shops for clothes

Just saw this on A Continuous Lean. Well worth taking a look at ...

http://www.acontinuouslean.com/2011/...ontinuous+Lean.)

McQueen has a cigarette in his mouth or his hand the entire time, except for this picture. Check out where the sales guys eyes are looking - at Steve's cig about to burn a hole in his nice woodwork.

Thanks for the link. Great pictures. Some of the comments about the car are hilariously stupid.

"ahh jag xk 55 so damn classy, it's sad how jaguars nowadays suck ass."
This person knows nothing about Jaguar, at least not about the classic XKSS

"Is it me or is the jag missing a windshield wiper on the driver's side?"
It's pretty obvious that it's a right hand drive car.

There will always be people who have sufficient knowledge or talent in a limited field to have allowed them tremendous financial success. Because they have suceeded -- in their eyes -- they go on to presume to know everything about evertying. Such men are a dime a dozen ... even here on SF.

Thanks for the link. The guy looks good in just about everything -- more the man than the clothes, I think.

Also notice the Baracuta jacket next to the cig on the table.

He certainly looks cool now, but I wonder if trad gents at the time thought he dressed like a slob?

showing up in his white socks, desert boots and all-khaki outfit. might be the 1960s equivalent of a tracksuit? I have no idea myself

You can get a book of Steve McQueen photographs by John Dominis from the same assignment (the text is in German). It only includes one of the excellent pics that appears on A Continuous Lean, which I think is a shame. William Claxton's book of McQueen photos also has one of him shopping, in somewhere called Battaglia in NYC.

I absolutely guarantee to you that his gaze is not focused on the cigarette.

Very neat photo, however.

Tod's didn't exist until the 80s. I wrote a huge post called "Don't Step On His Brown Suede Boots" on my blog, which made the error of claiming McQueen wore Tod's. I put up another post with corrections last August after a couple of people, especially an expert called TheWeejun, put me right.

I notice a few of the ACL comments seem to think it's a shop called Carroll & Co in Beverley Hills. This is what will279 had to say:

"The spot was later rebuilt as the signature store for Tommy Hilfiger; Brooks Brothers took it over after TH folded. Carroll & Co. is now located a few blocks away, still selling, I assume, a form of Ivy League for Hollywood types who don't know Polo or Brooks Brothers."
