JeanRichard is named after a famous early watchmaker but is a modern invention.  The owners of Girard Perregaux created it as a more accessible companion brand.  They are now majority owned by a big French company that also owns Gucci, Brioni and Saint Laurent among others and have had a resultant step up in brand profile e.g. sports sponsorships, most notably Arsenal Football Club for the last couple of years.

As for the watches, I've nothing positive or negative to say about them in quality, as I don't own one.  But conceptually, they have a few things going for them: they are a sister company of GP, which is a proper watch company.  They have the financial power behind them to ensure that they'll be around for a while.  And yet because they're a relatively modern brand, the discounts and shitty used prices make them fantastic value as long as you don't go to a AD!

I really, really like the Terrascope.  These cushion-tonneau cases appeal to me in general, and this one in particular I like.  It gets special kudos for not looking like a copy of another watch.  At PMW prices I'd say it's well worth it.

Thanks, Mimo. Exactly what I was looking for.

If I may, I would like to make a confession.

Hi, my name is Shawn, and I might be the only one who doesn't feel the Terrascope. I'm guessing this is solely a matter of taste and nothing against people who love its look, but I'm not so sure what the craze is all about.

Thank you all.

Watch for their weekly specials.  The Terrascope can regularly be had for under $1k.

Casework is first rate, IMO.  Movement is a basic Sellita - solid and dependable and accurate but not fancy.  But then you can find the same movement in a $7k IWC or Breitling - it makes much more sense here IMO.

I appreciate that being in the PMW thread might have led to some overexposure.  It is not known to be harmful.

Other timepieces are available.

No worries - that's kind of how I feel about Panerai and their followers are legion.

While the vast majority of watches made today are quartz models but I have never liked them, many people believe that wearing a fine mechanical watch sets them apart from the crowd but for me it was always a matter of personal
taste. While the mechanical watch has become a status symbol these days I always have and still love them to bits but I feel the current prices are just going crazy!
While I always have valued the craftsmanship required to create a mechanical movement and am willing to pay a great deal of money for it, I am also much more happier owning and using mechanical watches but my brain appreciates quartz these days only because of the price for that reason for the very first time in my life I am ready to own both.

My very first quartz watch. Now a few years ago if my son would have bought this watch for himself I would have thrown it out of the window, just shows how things change!

So you are allowed to laugh on the name but the watch fits and feels great!

Regarding that Orient Bambino watch mentioned earlier in the thread, anyone have any idea why a lot of the sellers are listing the model number as SER2400BW0 as well as FER2400BW0? Just want to make sure I'm not getting some sort of fake…

See example:
