Poor man's watch thread - Page 216

Hi M101,

No quite what I had in mind; that's more of a sports watch than a dress watch. The Raymond Weil Men's 54661-Pc-00300 is getting close: Tradition White Dial Gold-Plated Mens Watch 54661-PC-00300.

Having only yellow gold plating on and quartz movement keeps it under the $1k mark.

^ Here's a lovely white faced dial Poor Man's dress watch. I used to have one of these, and they're really great for the price. Lotsa options here for you (including yellow gold variants) and an overall great (looking) watch:

I'm liking the look of those watches and at those prices you could get a couple of styles. Automatic too.

Since 24ct gold is softer, does this mean the PVD plating will be exposed by standard wear over a relatively short time?

Sorry missed one of your posts. I thought you were asking about the poor mans equivalent to the Rolex Submariner

I got a message in my email inbox this morning that the Seiko SKX watches are currently marked down at Creation Watches (including the Pepsi version). So if you are thinking of picking up a new one, now might be an opportune time:

Seiko SKX at Creation Watches

I've purchased twice from Creation and would gladly use them again.

I don't know. Feel free to ask the people at Christopher Ward. I'm sure they'd be happy to answer your questions.

That being said, I have an SKX007 and before I recently got a Sinn it was my go-to watch everyday and would go with just about everything.

I've had an SKX007 for about 4 years now and tbh, I started to find it rather plain/boring. Just mailed it to MCWW today to get modded.

I recently bought an 009 and that bit of color from the Pepsi bezel does make a difference, adding some visual interest. Imo, the 007's Off-Black dial and the 009's Midnight dial have an equally 'flat'/dull appearance.

It's usually available for less from these 3 grey market ebay sellers from whom I've bought in the past:

pokemonyu
Timewares
Premierworld

Got my 009 (w/ Jubilee bracelet) from pokemonyu for $150 shipped. The key is to add several of their auctions to your watch list, see what they end at on average and bid on a subsequent listing.

I picked up an Orient Symphony off Ebay a few weeks ago. Relatively cheap watch (around $140 posted), automatic movement and it came with a steel bracelet. I preferred this over the Bambino because of the 22mm lugs and I had a few 22mm Rios cordovan bands laying around that I got for cheap (also from Ebay). It's been holding up quite well and I've received a few compliments on it.

I'm going to jump on an SXK007 from Creation now. I've been wanting the Steinhart ocean vintage for a while, but seeing now that the SKX007 is less than half the price of the Steinhart...

I'd like a sapphire crystal though, but I might get the Steinhart later if I can afford it.

Check the watch forums; preowned Steinhart OVMs are regularly listed for sale.

Be sure to post up some pictures when you get it back. I always enjoy seeing his mods, maybe a bit more so because I'm pretty sure he lives just a mile or two from me.

Will do!

Btw, a little advice for those considering mods: do your math first.

In my case, mod parts + labour (I'm also getting the case refinished and movement regulated) + shipping/return shipping are more than twice the price of the actual watch.

I can't help but feel like one of those guys who put a lot of money to modify a Honda Civic.

Thanks Kaplan. Here's a better pic of the dial, as i mentioned it is a subtle shade of off-white.

It's hard to capture in a pic but the light really dances off the cambered sapphire glass onto the dial smile.gif
