There was a great post about larger watch sizes on smaller wrists and how it doesn't matter as much.  The reason being that it may look big when directly looked at on the wrist but if you look at it as a whole and in comparison to your body it looks fine.  For instance that Parnis above is a 44 mm and my wrist is like 6.8 inches.  It looks big in that pic because you just see my wrist but when you look at it on me when looking at me as a whole it works.

Best advice is to try on a watch and see yourself in a full length mirror.  But you're right that they can get too big...  That 44 on me is borderline.
