It works with gray colored suits IMO. The casual route, an open collared black shirt, or a dark blue shirt, look excellent with a gray suit. Additionally, a silver colored tie in that combination just works, although some disagree.

Wow globetrotter isn't that constrictive on your tie collection?

My rule on this is, no shirt darker than suit, no tie lighter than shirt.
