I was going to make a Hideki Irabu quip, but damn I didn't know he actually ended up killing himself. frown.gif

Hopefully he does better than the other Japanese pitchers the yankees have given big contracts to in the past.

I think Tanaka is part of the new group of Japanese pitchers who finally had pitch count limitations in high school along with Darvish. They still had to pitch a ton but not like the 250inning performances in 7 days that guys like Dice-K had when they were still 15.

The story that's been going around is how he tossed 160 pitches in a game 5 and then came out in relief in game 6. I can assure you that Girardi's binder would never let that happen!

I've been watching some videos and it looks like he has a nasty splitter like Kuroda, which is a good pitch to have in the Bronx.

the thing that has me a little weary is that he's a bit of a "power nibbler" like dice-k. having 5 good pitches (or 7 like dice-k once had tongue.gif ) can just make you become one of those 100+pitches in 5inn guys.

darvish learned to abandon the power nibbler japanese nature and now attacks the strike zone (which helps with keeping pitch counts low).

I'm optimistic. If CC returns to form and Tanaka pans out a CC, Kuroda, Tanaka, Nova, Pineda rotation could be devastating. Although I'd be more comfortable with Arroyo instead of Pineda but I don't see that happening.

Jesus. 7/155. The east should be fun to watch

The Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan begins today. I see that the "West bus"--that includes Max Scherzer, Austin Jackson, and Joba Chamberlain among others--are making a stop at the Hudsonville Creamery in Holland. Two good reasons to go to Holland, tomorrow.

JV will not have any time for Joba. He's too busy dating Kate Upton.

it looks like lester and dustin pedroia are on the same page:

Jon Lester:

"I understand that to stay here, you're not going to get a free-agent deal. You're not going to do it. You can't. It's not possible. You're bidding against one team. I understand you're going to take a discount to stay. Do I want to do that? Absolutely."

^yehey hometeam discount!

still i understand a player willing to do that. and I understand the player wanting to get all the money possible.

I don't understand why any ballplayer would explicitly state he will give a hometown discount. He's pretty much asking to be low-balled. Also, in a sport where there is no salary cap and on a team with deep pockets the whole thing is even sillier. These Red Sox players have really bought into this whole we're more than the sum of our parts thing.

TLR's hat will not have a logo in the Hall of Fame. Oh man, I can't wait to hear my local sports talk radio discussions about that! (Despite his winning ways, TLR is not really beloved in the STL.)

blame obama maybe?

joking aside, pedroia actually gave up his academic scholarship in college so his team could recruit/sign more players for a college championship run. lester dealt with cancer (and reading about it back in 2006-2007) the team was very supportive (by his side throughout all the chemo and eventual recovery).

evan longoria and the rays basically started this trend of locking up players early. its something the yankees theoretically could've done, too. the more I think of it the yankees should have so many inherent advantages compared to tampa/boston in using that model.

Right and I understand all of that. I'm not saying that giving a hometown discount is dumb, I'm saying that coming out and saying it might be. I also don't think he's being totally genuine. The cynic in me says he is truly motivated by getting a deal done now in case he has a down year.
