But I won't argue with you about the smug fans. I grew up a Yankees fan in the 80s and early 90s. "Steinbrenner" was a dirty word in my house. The bandwagon fans piss me off. But I also can't stand people who act like Yankees fans never suffered... I've been a Yankees fan all my life, but I never experienced a Yankees postseason game until I was a teenager. People are flipping **** about the Red Sox .426 season, but forget that the Yankees finished in last place in the AL with a .414 winning % in 1990 (worst season since 1913). The Yankees have found a way to win and a way to do it consistently, and as the Red Sox have proven, there's a lot more to that than just throwing money around.

Rarely have I been so depressed. I don't blame Valverde. I blame Leyland for keeping him out there. I don't know if I have the stomach to watch tonight's game. These late, late, late night games are killing me.

JV will have pitch the complete game for us to win.

I don't think that Valverde's contract will be renewed for next season. And if we lose tonight, neither will Leyland be back.

The playoff game I went to NYY v Tigers last year Valverde almost gave up the goose in the 9th as well. He's not reliable and is a loose cannon.

Anyway, real talk: the reason I hate the Yankees (and the Red Sox) is that they represent the pinnacle of big money business baseball. They don't have any loyalty to their farm system, there's no baseball strategy or run support, it's simply finding the biggest, flashiest high market prospect on the trade market, and signing them to a monster deal. Look at their roster: every player is a brand name commodity, and their pitching staff is populated by highly-paid aces who perform well. There's no.. magic, or soul. It's just a collection of paychecks with no team spirit or unity. Then you look at teams like the A's and the Orioles, who win through a combination of strategy, cultivating prospects and luck... there's just so much more to it then the merely blowing the bank each season.
And then there's the smugness of the fan, or the fact that the Yankees are one of the teams where any moron from any city can magically become a "Yankees fan" by buying a hat and shouting a lot.

^you should really hate the Tigers using that logic. prince fielder/miguel cabrera poached from poorer teams. 5th highest team salary in baseball. Prince fielder/cabrerra/verlander all make over 20million/year.

I have a feeling verlander is going to be magic tomorrow and just dominate. cold bay area weather + power pitcher = possible shutout.... what we should expect from the Detroit Ace who earns $20,000,000 + a year.

^kudos to Detroits owners and management for spending money and being competitive for the last decade. I'm glad the fans get to experience that.

also recent redsox players from the farm system: jacoby ellusbury, dustin pedrioa, kevin youkilis, jon lester, clay buchholz, johnathan pabelbon, daniel bard... those were/are legitimate MLB players straight form the farm system who are starters. hell even nomar garciapara was from the redsox farm system (i watched him when he was playing in Pawtucket for the Pawsox).

girardi was an idiot to force Arod to even play yesterday. if anything stick with Arod during a 7 game series where he has time to eventually work things out. in a short series just go for the quick KO with everyone thats hot.

Valverde is done. Time to look at Benoit ( :foo: ) or Al Al.

I'll be interested to see if Johnson gets another save opportunity this series.

Every closer blows saves. Even Mariano Rivera. If Johnson is the O's best relief pitcher, they have to throw him out there again in Game 4 and hope he has a short memory. Same goes for the Tigers and Valverde.

Number of home-grown starting pitchers:
Yankees: 2 (Pettitte, Hughes)
Orioles: 2 (Gonzalez, Chen... and that's a stretch considering his experience in Japan)
Number of home-grown players in the starting lineup tonight:
Yankees: 2 (Jeter, Cano)
Orioles: 3 (Wieters, Flaherty, Machado)
Home-grown closer:
Yankees: Not right now, but technically, yes.
Orioles: Yes
Key home-grown relievers:
Yankees: Joba, Robertson, Phelps
Orioles: Matusz. That's it.
So we're pretty even on that front. And as far as strategy goes, wouldn't you agree that pinch-hitting a 40-year-old (who is barely making a million dollars this season!) who winds up hitting the game-tying and game-winning home runs for a guy who makes 28 TIMES as much is strategy?

-10 Million as Kevin Gregg isn't on the team anymore. And I would assume the biggest chunk of that 80M belongs to Jones and Markakis. Jones just signed his contract this year.
