I'm good with the Hunter signing. I would have rather had Upton, but Hunter is still a huge improvement over Young in the field and bat (as long as he doesn't regress like his 37-year-old body should).

Regarding Illitch having even more free money because of the lack of an NHL season - I hadn't thought of that but that's an interesting thought. I overheard one of Illitch's lawyers in the locker room of my gym a few weeks ago talking about the NHL lockout and he didn't sound too hopeful that there would be a season at all this year. That's coming solel from ownership side though so take that FWIW.

Uh Uh. Verlander deserved it last year and he won it. IIRC best season since Zito in Oakland before he signed with the Giants and stepped into a turdpile.

The Mets are too stupid to pay him the cash. SF should sign him. (Although a couple more bats would probably be better).

It's definitely interesting to wonder how all of that money is accounted for and how he allocates it. I'm sure it's all in separate entities but its the same source. They aren't done yet. Need a closer and another arm.

Again, the owner isn't paying salaries. I don't think a shared owner affects it much. The teams are corporations with their own assets and payrolls.

Correct, but ultimately its the same pocket. I mean they aren't going to take the $50 million or whatever they aren't paying the Red Wings and infuse it somewhere else, but paying a few extra million to get someone over another team probably isn't out of the question.

I have no idea if that's the case or not. Just interesting to me how it's all separated. I'd be fascinated how that all melts together.

This is making me think about fiduciary duties from Biz Orgs (or my current class, Regulation of Mutual Funds). I just want to talk about baseballlllll!

Miggy's a great guy, a great player, and a world beating bat. But as long as I'm gonna get the fuck sabermetrics posts anyways I'll say it. The MVP is not the Hank Aaron Award. Miggy plays an offense-first position and it shows - all his value comes from that skill.

Again, to avoid using scary numbers that apparently ruin the game...

Miggy: .330/.393/.606 over 697 PA
Trout: .326/.399/.564 over 639 PA

Miggy had a negligible edge in AVG, Trout a negligible edge in getting on base, and Miggy had smore (but not a crazy amount more) pop, .042 SLG. Accounting for his average lead that's .038 ISO. That's one extra extra-base every 7-8 games, roughly. And yes, 58 more PA, or one more Miggy PA every 3 games. Was Miggy better with the bat (raw)? Absolutely.

But then, of course, you remember that Miggy's a 3B where Trout's a CF, making Trout's offense more valuable. And Trout, ya know, played like he remembered he was wearing a glove. And can run. The argument for Miggy requires a reliance on outdated measures of producing value (RBIs) or an obsession with a small offensive edge to the exclusion of everything else (including the fact that Trout's offense was more valuable given his position).

It's not what you say, it's how you say it. The outlandish acronyms and meaningless (without explanation) numbers are what irk people. Just like people don't want to hear real science when they watch the weather report they do not want an arcane flow of numbers and acronyms explaining why one player is better than another.

They were roughly equal offensively in value. Miggy played slightly more and hit for slightly more power, Trout played a position where his offense was scarcer and thus more valuable. Trout was better at everything else on the baseball field.
