FS: Micro SD Cards that turn Nook Color into an Android Tablet running Froyo

Disclaimer - Yes, I'm fully aware you can do this yourself if you enjoy this kind of thing. With a couple hours of research on XDA Developer forums and the right software programs you can do exactly what I'm doing yourself - it's not magic and I didn't code any software or anything. This is not targeted towards hardcore DIY members, but those that'd like to add value to their Nook Color's without dicking around with rooting, configuring Android, flashing SD cards, and partitioning via Terminal and such. I have three versions available, depending on how much space you want left over: 4GB - $35 shipped 8GB - $45 shipped 16GB- $65 shipped Shipping is via USPS Priority with Delivery Confirmation (2-3 business days) These are all brand new, brand name (either Adata, Transcend, or Wintec) high speed Class 6 Micro SD Cards. Literally all you have to to is pop the card into the Nook Color and turn it on. The system will boot into Android Froyo 2.2 (fully Rooted and ready to go) and you have yourself a great Android Tablet. You have full access to the Android Market, Gmail, etc, etc. Every now and then the odd app won't work correctly (for example, I have a metronome app that can't deal with the larger screen) but a good 95% of them (and all of the critical ones) work fine. There is zero risk - if you remove the card, your nook will boot into the 100% original stock operating system. There is NO trace of Android leftover - your warranty will not be voided. To help you get started, I have installed a customized blend of applications that work excellent with the Nook Color, including but not limited to: Zeam home launcher (through which you can completely customize your background and home screen) Dolphin HD Web Browser Nook Reader Adobe Flash Button Savior Please be aware:
  • This does not modify hardware in any way, shape, or form. You may revert back to original software at any time by removing the SD card.
  • While this is genuine Android Froyo 2.2, it is unofficial and hence I cannot guarantee that all media files will play. Don’t blame me if you try to play some esoteric .ogg file and it doesn’t work! Do your research before you buy.
  • I cannot be responsible for any changes you make to Android or your Nook after you receive the SD card.
  • The Youtube App is not included. Currently this does not work on ANY version of Froyo for the Nook Color. This will likely be fixed in a future update, but for now you can simply remove the SD card and watch youtube through the stock Barnes and Noble Youtube app.
  • Cards will be shipped within three business days of receiving payment (usually sooner).
  • This will not give the nook hardware it does not have - for example, there is no GPS chip in the nook.
If you have any questions, just ask - I'd be glad to answer them. I have perfect heatware under computerpro3 and thousands upon thousands of posts on technology forums like hardforums, anandtech, and xtremesystems. I've been trading online for nearly a decade with never a single complaint. Thanks for looking.

Very cool. Does the Nook Color have free 3G wireless that continues to work when running this?

not sure how it could do this.

The nook does have free 3g, just as the amazon kindle has free 3g.

So yeah, with Android installed, does the 3g still work?

This is not a Nook. It's the Nook Color. So no, it does not have 3G and it does not work.

I wonder why barnes and nobles doesn't just do this themselves, they are missing out on tons of profits. Regardless, this has me looking into buying a nook color now .

Because then the price would likely double or more due to software costs and they are thrust into a market with the likes of APPL, RIMM, Samsung etc... They are, surprisingly to me, doing just fine in the market they are in besting Kindle sales.

Do you have a source for this? I tried to look briefly but couldn't find anything, I am not saying you are wrong or trying to be argumentative, but I would be shocked if this were the case.

How does it handle video formats, avi, divx, mkv, etc?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Video is the device's weakness. You can download plenty of apps that can play them in the marketplace, but hardware acceleration is not enabled at the moment. It's only a matter of time until it is (the XDA people are working on it right now) but as of today I wouldn't consider it a good high definition video device.
