(b) study some self-defence or martial arts. I doubt very much there will be a "necktie attack defence dojo" out there, so you have to go with a regular old martial art, but if they teach self defence, wristlocks and throws, they should teach you what you need to know.

What the hell is wrong with you people? The SF-approved method of dealing with a situation like this is to say very coldly and distinctly, "Unhand me, my good man!" Once he's reeling from that, you can finish him off with "Good day to you, sir!" But that, of course, will be a bit much for dealing with most felonious assaults. Honestly.

The fact this thread exists upsets me. Your gonna smash someones nose because they grabbed on your tie? Its not like you need special training to fight when wearing a tie.

An excellent idea, esp. if they're clip-on. For that matter a nice clip-on tie would be nice - no worries in either case.

I don't think the OP is talking just about someone grabbing your tie and not doing anything else, but about someone grabbing your tie as part of a general assault and in the course of that assault, opportunistically using it as a weapon. It does happen, esp. in some settings and is potentially very quickly lethal in that setting so I can understand why the topic exists (though perhaps it's a bit odd for it to crop up on SF, as opposed to a board dealing with self-defence or risk management). Dealing with any assault is easier after training, regardless of whether a tie is involved or not, and in fact there are specially developed breakaway and other techniques that can be used when someone has you by the neck (whether with their hands, or using a tie, or another weapon).

Good point about the garrote; if the attacker is a skilled grappler, the defender could be in for a whole world of hurt. Guess that's why SN's UCM methodology is so crucial to practice dilligently; don't mind saying that's probably my biggest weakness.
