Does anyone know of any self defense courses that address such a potential problem? I haven't heard of any, even with the craze of mixed martial arts and such.

(a) kick him in the nuts.

(b) study some self-defence or martial arts. I doubt very much there will be a "necktie attack defence dojo" out there, so you have to go with a regular old martial art, but if they teach self defence, wristlocks and throws, they should teach you what you need to know.

What the hell is wrong with you people? The SF-approved method of dealing with a situation like this is to say very coldly and distinctly, "Unhand me, my good man!" Once he's reeling from that, you can finish him off with "Good day to you, sir!" But that, of course, will be a bit much for dealing with most felonious assaults. Honestly.

The fact this thread exists upsets me. Your gonna smash someones nose because they grabbed on your tie? Its not like you need special training to fight when wearing a tie.

An excellent idea, esp. if they're clip-on. For that matter a nice clip-on tie would be nice - no worries in either case.

I don't think the OP is talking just about someone grabbing your tie and not doing anything else, but about someone grabbing your tie as part of a general assault and in the course of that assault, opportunistically using it as a weapon. It does happen, esp. in some settings and is potentially very quickly lethal in that setting so I can understand why the topic exists (though perhaps it's a bit odd for it to crop up on SF, as opposed to a board dealing with self-defence or risk management). Dealing with any assault is easier after training, regardless of whether a tie is involved or not, and in fact there are specially developed breakaway and other techniques that can be used when someone has you by the neck (whether with their hands, or using a tie, or another weapon).

Against an average Joe this would not be difficult to overcome effectively. Against someone who knows a tie is an effective garrote and knows how to use one you're in deep and better possess a good counter skill set.

You on TPI too?

Cool, man!

Being humbled by the sheer depth and magnitude of combative knowledge there, I lurk much, much much more than I post though...

When you got guys like SNarc, Bel, PSharp, LLinderman etc who live and breathe the black art of ECQC, it's better to just S2L 'stead of yappin away like a fool.

Good point about the garrote; if the attacker is a skilled grappler, the defender could be in for a whole world of hurt. Guess that's why SN's UCM methodology is so crucial to practice dilligently; don't mind saying that's probably my biggest weakness.

Still... like I said before: wrong forum, OP!

For some reason it makes me angry how serious some people seem to be taking this...
It's so hypothetical and bordering paranoia.

Forensics shrink guys maybe. But normal everyday situations, what the frigging hell?!
And as if everyone who attack you will grab your tie first, for all we know the brute would just punch you in the face straight up.

You may also want to add, "Do you know that this tie costs more than your entire outfit, and that includes your designer skull doo rag"

You can finish by whipping out your dark green cow-killer Hermes wallet from your hand-stitched inner suit pocket, and slapping him silly across the face till he cries: UNCLE!
