Personally, I don't like thick soles at all, but because the sambas' are thinner and slightly sleaker, they're more often the sneaker of choice for dressing down a suit, etc.

Not really, besides the soles there are enough differences between the two shoes. Gazelles have a rounder toe box. Gazelles are rounder all around and Sambas are lower profile all around not just the soles.

Think I'm gonna pick something like a Gazelle up. Looks like the most readily available version are Campus 80's and I like the silouette. Reds are few and far between, though. Think I can wear the greens with jeans?

One of the better adidas models, quite classic. They've made editions without the stripes before too, but those border looking too plain. I haven't owned any since I wore through my last pair a few years back.

I agree, gazelles, sambas, superstars, laver/stan smiths make quite a package of classics.

The gazelles are a nice simple clean look, which appeals to me...but personally, I'm more of a Superstar man myself. The shell toe adds just enough flash IMO without being overbearing.

For some reason, I think the Superstars are one of the only white sneakers that look good with jeans.

I find gazelles to be really freaking narrow. I didn't wear mine for about 4 months and then when I finally wore them, got pains in my feet for like the first few times, terrible pains the first time (For reference they are size 7, I'm normally a size 5-6 in gentlemen shoes and 7 in sneakers i.e: nike, chucks). Probably the narrowest sneakers I've ever worn. I'm selling my pair btw < /shameless plug >
