dont lie about what your drinking and don't go out of your way to draw attention to yourself. and positively DONT preach about not drinking, its a subject you want to turn off as soon as it comes up

I recently gave up drinking, so I know where your coming from.

100% Agree.

I am so confused as to why people are giving the advice to pretend you are drinking/drunk, which seems incredibly stupid to me.

Just say "I don't drink", and when you get the inevitable response of "why?" say "It's a personal choice". Anyone who doesn't get that, is an asshole.

Don't lie, don't tell people you're not drinking unless they ask, don't fake it. Have something in your hand. If someone asks just say I'm all good thanks. If they pressure you tell them to go fuck themselves.
