I never made it to the G-town store, since I managed to spend nearly 2 hours at the Orvis comparing the Beaufort with the Filson Cover Cloth Weekender. It's a toughy: The Beaufort is definitely the more refined, classier looking piece. I like the lined handwarmers and that chest pocket that's outside the zipper but inside the buttons. I know y'all know what I mean. But it almost looks like a uniform to me, sort of the "this is what guys of a certain crowd wear." I guess that's the down-side of being iconic. The Filson's more robust, heavier, and generally sturdier feeling (not that the Barbour's a slacker in that regard.) It's more interesting looking and definitely more unusual. Workman-like, but not too much so. Trimmer fitting. I wore both with and without liners and with and without my own REI fleece underneath. You can wear fleece + liner with both, although the Filson feels a touch tighter without being too much so. The Beaufort is not a trim fitting coat...but we knew that and understand why. If I weren't interested in being able to layer I'd definitely size down on the Beaufort. The Filson's also $100 cheaper. Sigh.
I have to confess that as good as the Beaufort looks on me, I feel self conscious about it. It's a look. A recognizable look. Kind of like sporting a Rolex sub. Iconic for a reason (i.e. quality and good looks), but sort of a cliche. Stupid, I know.
