Offical Barbour Thread - Page 32

So I know this has been mentioned time to time, but what do you think is a better option. The Bedale in the Sykoil or the traditional cotton?
I have read that the sykoil doesnt look as good once worn in. Thoughts?

Also, as far as liners go. Quilted or the fur type?

As far as I know, Sykoil and Barbour's waxed cotton = same thing. Waxed cotton looks fantastic worn/beat up, if you like the aesthetic.

For liners, fur pile all the way. I think it's marginally warmer than quilt, but much more comfortable.

Thanks for the response. The only reason I was considering the quilt is because it could be worn alone.

Also, I have quickly learned that buying from a UK dealer is substantially cheaper than buying in the states. for roughly the same price of just the jacket, I could get a jacket, hood, liner, and a free scarf to boot. maybe $30 more for all of it, including the shipping.

Where are you buying from?

Edit: If you don't mind me asking.

I'm pretty sure they are not the same thing. If they were, why make two of the same jacket in the same "thing."

This thread indicates that the appearance may be slightly different as well as how it maintains itself:

Interesting... It also appears that you can only get the olive color in the sylkoil version. Which look do you guys prefer; shiny or matte?

I have an A7 I've beaten the hell out of and love but since last winter its about a size too big on me.

Does anyone have experience with getting a barbour tailored?

can anyone in Boston/MA recommend a tailor you'd trust with such a job?

If you are in Boston, couldn't you go straight to the Barbour factory in NH to get it tailored?

My experience has been that the olive color simply is for people that want a lighter, more weathered (but new) version of sage. With years of wear, I think you would only see a marginal difference between the two, as long as you keep up with reproofing, after some sun fade and foul weather wear. Aesthetics, not materials.

As far as tailoring goes, I would not trust anyone but Barbour in NH to do it. Orvis has a form for the various tailoring options (at least in the Boston Faneuil Hall Orvis) that they will send along with the jacket up to NH.

The wax itself is the same thing. Barbour only uses one kind of wax. The difference is how the fabric itself is made and how it is applied to the fabric and at what stage during production. Different production methods = different names for the wax finish

thanks for the reply, I guess Barbour in NH would be the best option
was just thinking if I could get someone local as opposed to driving an hour away...
then again, it's a special jacket so I should probably go where they'd know best

My only concern would be if the Beaufort were too long. Does anyone have fit pics for someone that is around 5'5"? I tried a jacket on at an Orvis outlet and I think it was a longer model than the Beaufort but it came down to just above my knees.
