That it's handmade rather than machine-made makes the scarf much more visually appealing, in my opinion (kind of like slubby denim, I guess). As long as you don't attempt anything too elaborate, a scarf is also one of the easiest things you could possibly knit, it will probably save you money, and its quality will be as nice as the yarn you choose. Anyway, this might be a ridiculous suggestion, but it's a thought.
I never really did consider that, actually. I'm not really sure if it's possible to knit a scarf that doesn't look really chunky, but I'll look into it. It's something I'd like to try once or at least find out more about, but I just don't have time at the moment.
