I use mine whenever they are not on my feet. I also put them in after wearing to help keep them in shape and to soak up any moisture in the the shoe from the days wearing.

Anyone use the adjustable shoe trees to stretch the shoe out a bit?

My dad gave me some shoe trees that his father used so I am sure they are at least 40-50 years old and it's crazy the toe end expands in width and it has a metal ratcher that you can adjust the length and adjust it a tad bit bigger then the shoe is and push it down and semi for it to stretch.

Anyone?

Shoe trees do not absorb moisture. That is a myth.

If the shoes get soaked, stuff them with paper towels (but not to bursting -- do not stress the wet leather). Do not use shoe trees until they dry out (at room temperature).

I've got about seven or eight pairs of dress shoes in current rotation and only three sets of trees. Do I really NEED a pair for every of pair of shoes, or is this enough? I rotate pretty well.

Also, I don't use trees in any of my casual shoes, but then again, I don't buy high-quality casual shoes.

LWAYS keep your shoes in trees when not wearing them. If your shoe trees are made of cedar (which they should be) it absorbs and eliminates odor giving your shoe that fresh woody scent. Dont wait till your shoes dry from your sweat; put the trees in the second you take your shoes off and let the wood do its thing!

Yes, Nordstrom - $20. Get some shoe trees for all of the dress shoes.

What he said. It goes against forum orthodoxy, but I have shoes in my rotation ranging from a few weeks old to the late 1980s, with a variety of trees (plastic, plastic/wood, painted wood, varnished wood, untreated wood). I can't detect any notable difference made by the type of tree if they are well shaped to the shoe.

Any tree is better than no tree at helping keep shape and minimising creasing: so use them. Minimising, though. The only way of keeping shoes looking like new is never wearing them.

This "absorbs moisture" stuff is IMHO bollocks. The best way of drying something is through exposure to heat (not good for leather) or air. Not by holding a big block of solid wood next to it. You don't dry your hair after a shower by holding a 2 by 4 next to your head.

+1. Why does G&G sell varnished trees if the job of the tree is to absorb moisture?

Check out Bexley.com. They have 5 shoe trees for 59 Euro.

You can do well picking them up whenever Jos A Bank has a 50% off the first item, 60% off the second, and 70% off the third. I picked up two trees as the 2nd and 3rd items a couple of weeks ago--2 Woodlands for $17.50.

The Gatco plastic tree toward the bottom of this link is perfectly adequate - and the same tree some high-end makers used to sell, branded for them, at much more cost.
