Naval warfare films/series

Good evening, gentlemen.

Anyone got any good recommendations here?

I'm thinking something along the lines of "Master & Commander: The far side of the world" as well as the "Hornblower" series.

If anyone could recommend me something similar, I'd be much obliged.

Thank you in advance.

Das Boot The Hornblower series from A&E (all of them) Master and Commander Midway The Enemy Below (And for documentaries, very little comes close to Victory at Sea.)

I was about to recommend Master and Commander, but I see you're already aware of it. Amazing series of novels as well, and the movie is having a sequel made. Have you much taste for sub warfare? Hunt for the Red October, or perhaps U-571. (Though the 2nd film is an Americanization of British exploits, which I found annoying)

I was thinking mostly of old school sailships, the kind used in the napoleonic wars and before, such as are featured in master&commander and hornblower, but thanks for the other tips anyways. Incidentally, I'd seen most of the films anyways, except for das boot. That's about a boat during WWII transporting heavy-water or something, isn't it? I think my class saw that in high-school, but I was sick that day.

I'm not sure I've seen "Mutiny on The Bounty", but I just finished watching "The Bounty" with Mel Gibson, so I'm guessing it's a different filmatization of the same incident.

Is it confirmed that they are making a sequel to Master & Commander? Last I heard, Russel Crowe was tweeting that people should email some guy at some studio who was the decisionmaker if they wanted to see it made. Essentially that they own the rights and they know the novels are an untapped well of great material, but that they are reluctant to make a sequal because the first one, despite generally doing well, didn't create enough hype for the sequal to live on that alone.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, many of them I have seen (and liked a lot), and I'll try to check out the ones I haven't, but if anyone has any other recommendation of naval films from back when they used sailships, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

I read the book No Ship May Sail when I was younger and really enjoyed it. I know you asked for movies but I'll throw it out there. It was about American blocked runners before the War of 1812.

This is unfortunately a genre not well explored. Often sailing films devolve into parody or pirate movies, which I have never enjoyed. There are some great sail ship films, but most are older. Consider: Riddle of the Sands, from the '70s and starring Michael York. I haven't seen this available on DVD, but if you can find it, watch it. It's excellent. The book it is based on it great as well. EDIT - It's apparently available in a Region 2 DVD, which is a real shame because it's one of my favourites. http://www.amazon.com/Riddle-Sands-N...5927069&sr=8-4 Sea Wolf - there are a dozen versions of this. The Edward G. Robinson version and the Charles Bronson ones are my favourites. Captain Hornblower, the 1951 version with Gregory Peck Moby Dick (also the Gregory Peck version) Billy Budd Kidnapped - The version with Armand Assante from the '90s. John Paul Jones Captains Courageous (the '30s version is the best) Damn the Defiant from the '60s.

Victory at Sea is about as good as it gets, and now the whole series is available on Blu-Ray for not a lot of money: http://www.amazon.com/Victory-at-Sea...5927442&sr=1-1 You'll love it. EDIT: Oh, sailing ships. Fuk me, I dunno.
