Lived in china as a kid. Lunar New Year is always awesome. It feels more lively and festive than Christmas.

I do not recommend it.

People usually get around 5 days off, so a lot of people go on vacation during that time, throw in the migrant workers who are going home and you get an infrastructure nightmare. PITA to get tickets and tourist attrations are packed. If you are in Beijing, out of Beijing businessmen/government officials drives into Beijing to visit customers/people of authority and the roads become a gridlock. Its already a mess without out-of-towners, the roads just become a shitshow during chinese new year.

On top of that, it is no longer as festive as it used to be. In fact, I think Chinese new year is more festive in Singapore than in China.

More people celebrate Christmas than CNY now FWIW. I used to have so much fun in China during CNY week when I was younger.

I live in BJ, but i'm currently back in the States for Spring Festival avoidance. It's worth experiencing once or twice, though.
