Nobu is so commercialized. If you want good new style sushi go to Sushi of Gari or Sushi Seki. If you want good traditional sushi, don't go to Nobu, go to Masa, Kuruma Zushi, or sushi Yasuda.

A place that only japanese businessmen go to is generally very good. Kuruma Zushi is one such place, another is this Yakitori place called Tori Shin. It is amazingly good and most people haven't even heard of it.

I'm also a huge fan of Nobu, although I also agree it's mostly commercialized at this point. In fact, they have several restaurants in the Los Angeles/Malibu area too. It still has great food!

I'm not sure how it is now a days, but when I lived in NYC, we used to frequent Yama --- not the highest quality, but it was fairly high quality for a relatively cheap price.

Good summary. I was searching for some more info on the topic and came upon this thread. I've frequented quite a few places in NYC, and here are my quick snap shots...in no particular order:

  • Sushi Yasuda -- probably best omakase for the amount paid. Extremely fresh, exotic fish (sea urchin belly!), and friendly staff. Very happening scene. They seem to marry the whole traditional concept with an enjoyable atmosphere. Very clean.
  • Sushi Seki -- UES, I agree, much more new style. Diners here seem to love it. I'm more of a traditionalist, but admired a lot of the fish and the creative angle. They seem very tolerant, too, as the guys next to me at the sushi bar were swirling their wasabe in the soy sauce and ordering endless spicy tuna rolls. Seki himself is gifted
  • Kuruma Zushi -- Many people miss this, and I know why, the price tag is through the roof. I had omakase there recently, one person, no alcohol, no dessert, still north of $300. I consider that a lot. That said, you can tell it's a cut above other sushi restaurants, although I wonder if Yasuda is about tied in terms of freshness and uniqueness of fish. Oh, they're crazy about toro here (probably why more expensive)
  • Sasabune -- Has a crazy 29 food rating on Zagat, but the decor is laughably bad. That said, the omakase is DELICIOUS. I'm craving it right now. They use warm rice, which some people like, some do not. I fall in the latter camp and really like the freshness of the sushi and sashimi and they have a great blue crab handroll to end the meal
  • Sushiann -- My first foray into omakase. This is a little more modest than the above restaurants, but the chefs and staff are super friendly and I see lots of Japanese people here. In some ways, I find it very authentic, in that it's not over-the-top sushi
  • Morimoto -- Outside the box here, in that we're getting into fusion territory, but the fusion is SO good. It's impossible not to have fun here, but again, I'm more of a traditionalist so don't go here often (although top choice in Philly by far)
  • Sushi of Gari 46 -- I probably should've done the UES version, but I liked, didn't love the omakase here. They did some cooked dishes, which I generally find disappointing relative to nigiri style sushi

On my list is Sushi of Gari (original), Masa (may be too expensive right now, though), Ushiwakamaru, and Sushi Azabu. Any recommendations of which of those to try next?

15 East is my go to.  I prefer it over Yasuda.

 

I'm still on waiting list for Ichimura.

 

I'm pretty much done with Kanoyama, my last bill there was near 300 and I could have 2-3 meals for that much at Ushiwakamaru or 15 East.

 

There's a few new modestly priced places to check out like Tanoshi, and Yasaka that recently popped up.

I went a few weeks ago and had the omakase for four. I don't have the most refined sushi palate, but after a certain point everything started to taste the same - eel prepared five different ways was a little much.

 

Lovely place and I'd go back. Just alone and sitting at the bar so I can order a little more on target to my taste.

Ushiwakamaru, Seki, and Gari have more creative fish and I'd recommend Ushi the most in terms of quality of this set.

All of the above is top-of-the-line in my book.

I spent about $225 at Ushiwakamaru with one cup of sake, a couple large bottles of water, and edamame on top of the omakase.
