After 50 Years, Which Fantastic 4 Hero Gets Offed?

Sorry, Human Torch fans: The iconic Marvel Comics character is no more. The Torch, aka Johnny Storm, died in issue No. 587 of the Fantastic Four comic book, released today. The high-profile death comes 50 years after the Fantastic Four's debut, as part of an epic storyline that will see the end of the series with issue 588. "There won't be an issue 589," says a Marvel executive. "Beyond that, we're not ready to say exactly what we're doing."

The Fantastic Four were formed in August 1961, four normal people transformed by cosmic radiation into Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch. Of course, death in comic books is rarely permanent, and other members of the team have been thought dead in the past. But Marvel's chief creative officer tells the AP what is important is not the Human Torch's death, but how the story is told: "I can assure you that it's going to be very, very interesting and not what anyone expects."

I had a feeling about this. Oh well.

HT's death was somewhat underwhelming. The FF are always traveling, seeing alternate verisons of the themselves, so the death of a main character doesn't strike me as particularly epic. I mean, it wasn't that far back that Richards saw a dozen versions of himself killed. So it kind of cheapens the importance of anyone guy. That's why I prefer street level guys....

Has Ennis put out anything new recently?

Those of you who like the alt comics should check out The Unwritten by Mike Carey and Locke & Key by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son). I'm reading them both now and they're pretty damn good.

Agree on the Bone call. I was just getting my fix with the Tall Tales collection. Another trilogy is coming out soon, called, I believe, The Spark.

What is the best work by Grant Morrison? He seems to be one of the better writers... but I am yet to be amazed by his work. I must be reading the wrong comics.

All Star Superman is probably one of the best things i've ever read in any medium ever (but read the introduction, it's kind of unlike other superhero comics and takes some getting used to).

Animal Man is a nice little primer to the super-textual games he plays, but it takes a bit to get into. If you dig that kind of stuff then The Invisibles.

The first couple New X-Men trades were pretty cool. As was JLA (which was more standard superhero-y fare)

His run on Batman is also pretty great.

+1 Was just about to type this. He managed to make lame-looking characters into really intriguing personalities. I daresay it rivals early Astonishing X-Men as one of the most engaging X titles in recent memory.

I thought Astonishing sucked. Whedon squandered an opportunity to make an excellent crossover (appeal, not character

) book with a great artist and instead decided to make mediocre continuity Appreciation. Seriously, Astonishing could've been the "book you give to your girlfriend who saw X-Men and thought it was kinda good" but it was instead whedon decided to make it "dense referential bullshit with a boring plot and great art"

Ok thanks. I think they have those graphic novels at the library. I will check them out!

These are the graphic novels I plan on reading in the near future... the Sentry, the Inhumans, Squadron Supreme (the old version), Sandman (going to give this a try), v for vendetta, miracleman (i might have to buy the comics). I just finished grad school so now i have some free time.

And i want to try and buy a huge lot of old Valiant comics... Solar Man of the Atom, Harbinger, etc..

Right now i am stockpiling... Batman : The Vengeance of Bane $$$$

FWIW... i enjoyed the first 10 issues of astonishing. Whedon took a different approach to the characters. It is hard not to like John Cassidy art (spelling?)
