Ray Charles

Obviously I've heard Ray Charles before, but I never listened to his music until recently. I feel like an idiot as it is consistently some of the best blues/R&B to ever grace my divine ears. "The Best of the Atlantic Years" has been playing on my computer nonstop all day. Just too good. This sounds corny/blatantly obvious, but the extent to which you can hear the music of TODAY in Ray's songs is amazing. I have placed him in my "sublime" category with the likes of Muddy Waters, Oscar Peterson and Art Pepper. Please list your favorite RC albums...would love some live cuts.

yeah, he's pretty much one of the top 5 musicians of the 20th century. An album I like is Genius + Soul = Jazz. It's a big band thing with arrangements by Quincy Jones

The Atlantic recordings box set called "Birth of Soul" is really great. It's 3cd's. There are other Atlantic collections, but this one is my favorite. No fat on this one.

Give "Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music" a try.

Live is my favorite. It's taken from the '58 Newport Jazz Festival and an Atlanta concert in '59.

Love that song! "Drown in My Own Tears" is epic as well.
